Sports for August 16th

Willy Adames scored twice, Christian Yelich had two hits and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the sloppy Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Sunday. Adames scored in the first and third as Milwaukee never trailed. The NL Central-leading Brewers took two of three in the series against the last-place Pirates. In the first, Adames singled off Dillon Peters (0-1) and stole second base. Eduardo Escobar then grounded up the middle to second baseman Rodolfo Castro, who threw the ball into the visitors’ dugout, allowing Adames to score. In the third, Adames walked and scored on a hard-hit Yelich fly ball that was misjudged by Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco. Polanco started in, but the ball sailed over his head and short-hopped the wall for a double.

Kevin Newman doubled and scored on Ben Gamel’s infield single in the third for Pittsburgh. Newman had six hits and five doubles in the series against Milwaukee. Neither team scored in the final six innings as the pitching staffs rebounded after allowing 24 combined runs in Saturday’s doubleheader. Brent Suter (12-5) struck out two in the fifth to earn the win. Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save. Counsell credited his bullpen’s effort after the unit covered 5 2/3 innings on Saturday.

Brewers starter Eric Lauer pitched four innings in his return from the COVID-19 injured list. He gave up one run and three hits, struck out six and walked none. Lauer had been out since Aug. 2.  Peters, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels for cash in July, made his Pirates debut. He allowed one earned run and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

RHP Justin Topa was optioned to Triple-A Nashville. LHP Aaron Ashby, the 27th man from Saturday, was also returned to Nashville. RHP John Curtiss was transferred to the 60-day IL with a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

The Brewers are off today. RHP Corbin Burnes (7-4, 2.23 ERA) starts Tuesday night at St. Louis. Burnes tied an MLB record by striking out 10 straight batters in his last start against the Cubs.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Sunday the Reds beat the Philies 7-4, the Marlins downed the Cubs 4-1 and the Cardinals beat the Royals 7-2.  The Brewers lead the Reds by 8 games, the Cardinals by 10, the Cubs by 20 ½ and the Pirates by 29 1/2 games.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love’s pro debut ended earlier than expected. Coach Matt LaFleur said Love “kind of got dinged” while getting sacked by Jonathan Greenard late in the first half of the Packers’ 26-7 preseason loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday night. Greenard came from Love’s blind side and stripped the ball from him to force a fumble.

“I got my arm hit on that play and I just dinged my shoulder a little bit,” Love said.

LaFleur said he had hoped Love would play three quarters. The 2020 first-round pick from Utah State instead sat out the entire second half.

Love expressed confidence he’d be ready for the Packers’ next preseason game.

“It just kind of feels a little ‘strainish,’ ” Love said. “We’ll see tomorrow.”

Love went 12 of 17 for 122 yards with a touchdown pass and a QB rating of 110 in his first game appearance since getting taken 26th overall in the 2020 draft. He also had a fumble. Love went 6 of 6 for 89 yards on a first-quarter drive on his third series that ended with Kylin Hill turning a short completion into a 22-yard touchdown. Kurt Benkert started the second half and went 8-12 for 88 yards. Green Bay’s offense wasn’t as effective the rest of the night as the Packers rested virtually all their regulars. .Devin Williams led the rushing attack with 32 yards on 4 carries. Devin Funchess led Green Bay receivers with 6 catches for 70 yards before leaving the game with an apparent minor injury and Malik Taylor caught 5 passes for 50 yards.

Although the circumstances surrounding Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Houston’s Deshaun Watson have been two of the NFL’s biggest offseason stories, neither played Saturday as the spotlight shifted to the other quarterbacks on each team. Davis Mills, the Texans’ third-round pick from Stanford, went 11 of 22 for 112 yards and an interception. He led one drive that ended with Scottie Phillips’ 5-yard touchdown run and another that led to a field goal.

Tyrod Taylor, the Texans’ likely starter if Watson isn’t available, went 4 of 4 for 40 yards in his lone series. Taylor led a 53-yard drive that resulted in one of Ka’imi Fairbairn’s four field goals.

Green Bay hosts the New York Jets next Saturday after holding joint practices with them Wednesday and Thursday.

ST. LOUIS — Steph Kostowicz came off the bench to lead five players in double figures with 18 points as the Wisconsin GLO withstood a late push from the Flint Monarchs before collecting a 97-84 win in a GWBA Tournament semifinal game at Fontbonne University in St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
