Sports for July 15th

Khris Middleton scored 40 points, including 10 straight for the Milwaukee Bucks down the stretch to send them past the Phoenix Suns, 109-103 on Wednesday night to tie the series 2-2. Middleton’s hot hand and a big block from Giannis Antetokounmpo gave the Bucks their second straight victory in the first close game of the series. Antetokounmpo had 26 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. His streak of 40-point games ended at two but the only number that matters for the Bucks is on the series scoreboard.  Devin Booker scored 42 points for the Suns, but his foul trouble cost them a chance to build a big lead in the second half. Chris Paul struggled through a 5-for-13 night, finishing with 10 points and five turnovers. Brook Lopez had 14 points for the Bucks and Jrue Holiday added 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. He shot only 4 for 20, but his defense helped knock Chris Paull off his game.  Pat Connaughton had 11 points and nine rebounds.  Milwaukee shot just 7 for 29 (24%) from 3-point range. Game five is Saturday night in Phoenix.

Booker had a big finish to the third quarter to send the Suns into the fourth leading 82-76, but he picked up his fifth foul barely a minute into the period and sat for about five minutes. Phoenix led by two with 2 1/2 minutes left before Middleton made the next two baskets to give Milwaukee a 101-99 edge with 1:28 to play. It appeared the Suns would tie it with a lob pass to center Deandre Ayton but Antetokounmpo swooped in to block it, flexing his muscles to the crowd behind the basket as the Bucks broke the other way on the fast break.

Middleton missed a couple of jumpers but Paul lost the ball after the second one when he slipped and fell down while dribbling. That sent Middleton off for a layup and he followed with four free throws to make it 107-101.

The G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, the Wisconsin Herd hosted a watch party for game four of the NBA Finals Wednesday night, bringing a number of Bucks fans to the Mineshaft in Oshkosh.  The event had a DJ from Milwaukee and a number of giveaways, including signed basketballs by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday.Herd president Steve Brandes said it was important for the organization to host an event like this and support the Bucks.

The Green Bay Packers are looking for message ideas from its most creative fans. The team is holding a Packers Everywhere ‘Give Us A Sign’ contest. It invites fans to submit a clever message to be turned into a gameday sign to be used at Lambeau Field. The winner will receive two Packers game tickets, as well as airfare to Green Bay and a 2-night hotel stay in the area. A panel of Packers officials will select the top 16 ideas, and fans will be invited to vote when their favorite sign ideas go head-to-head in a bracket-style competition from Aug. 9 until Sept. 6th.  Fans are also encouraged to vote often in the contest, as one random fan voter will also be selected to receive two game tickets to Lambeau Field. Go to the Packers website for more information on how to enter.

The world will find out July 27th if Aaron Rodgers will play for the Packers this year. That’s when veterans are scheduled to arrive at Green Bay’s training camp. Tuesday night at the MLB All-Star Game in Denver, five-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning was asked what he thinks of it all.

“Obviously, it’s the question of the summer here in Denver,” Manning said. “Obviously, I hope he plays somewhere this year. The fact that Aaron Rodgers might not play this year, I can’t fathom it. He’s too good of a player. Too fun to watch for the fans. I personally hope it’s in Green Bay. That’s what I see him as. I hope they can kinda make amends and work [it] out. That team is so close, if he were to leave there it’d be a major change, obviously, for them.

“My gut is he’s not coming to Denver. My gut is Denver’s gonna have Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater be their quarterback. At this point, you gotta kinda know what your plan is, you can’t be having a new quarterback three weeks before the season.”

Last weekend at the American Century Championship, Rodgers said he plans to figure out his future in a couple weeks.

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman is facing several charges, including one on suspicion of burglary domestic violence, after he was arrested at his wife’s parents’ residence in Redmond, Washington, early Wednesday. Redmond Police Department Chief Darrell Lowe said at a news conference Wednesday that Sherman also faces charges of suspicion of resisting arrest and malicious mischief. In addition, Washington State Patrol Capt.
