Chris Paul had 32 points and nine assists, Devin Booker scored 27 points and the Suns beat the returning Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Milwaukee Bucks 118-105 on Tuesday night in Game 1. Paul scored 16 points during a sensational third quarter that had Phoenix fans who waited 28 years to see the NBA Finals again screaming in delight
Finally playing for the title in his 16th season, the 36-year old star point guard has the Suns in the NBA Finals for only the third time, and it sure looked as if they could make this ending different than the other two. Deandre Ayton added 22 points and 19 rebounds to continue his breakout stretch of play in his first postseason. Antetokounmpo had 20 points and 17 rebounds after missing two games with a hyperextended left knee. Khris Middleton scored 29 points, but the Bucks will have to play from behind again after dropping Game 1 for the third straight series.
Both teams started well in a competitive first hal . The biggest lead was eight, with Mikal Bridges’ 3-pointer making it 57-49 at the break. But Paul shifted the Suns into another gear in the third. His opening jumper provided the first double-digit lead of the game, and he followed with a four-point play for the Suns’ next basket. He scored eight straight Phoenix points later in the period, hitting a 3-pointer, dancing around Bobby Portis for a layup and then hitting another 3. He then fired a pass to Ayton, who was fouled and made both free throws to make it 88-68 with 2:20 left. The Bucks cut it down to seven near the midpoint of the fourth before Paul helped the Suns restore a safe margin. He found Booker for a 3-pointer, stole the ball from Middleton and then hit a jumper to make it 106-94. The Suns made 25 of 26 free throws. Game two is Thursday night in Phoenix.
Mets ace Jacob deGrom likely lost one of his last two starts planned heading into the All-Star break when Tuesday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers was rained out. The game was called after a wait of nearly 2 1/2 hours and rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader Wednesday at 2:10 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. Each game will be scheduled for seven DeGrom, 7-2 with a record-low 0.95 ERA, had been scheduled to start against left-hander Brett Anderson (2-5, 4.69). New York had planned to have deGrom start the final game before the break on Sunday but is not likely to use him on short rest.
DeGrom was rescheduled to start Wednesday’s opener against Milwaukee All-Star Corbin Burnes (4-4, 2.41), who will remain on his original day. Anderson will start the second again against a Mets pitched not yet announced. innings under pandemic rules. The tarp was put on the field Tuesday shortly after the Brewers ended batting practice. At 6:15 p.m., a message flashed on the scoreboard warning fans to take cover due to the imminent arrival of severe weather. Torrential thunderstorms arrived shortly thereafter and only intermittently let up. At least twice, the grounds crew walked on to the tarp to sweep off the water just as the rain increased.
In games played Tuesday in the NL Central the Pirates nipped the Braves 2-1, the Phillies outslugged the Cubs 15-10, the Royals slipped past the Reds 7-6 and the Cardinals shaded the Giants 6-5. The first-place Brewers lead the Reds by 6 ½ games in the division, the Cardinals are 8 ½ out, the Cubs 9 and the Pirates ae 18 ½ games out of first place.
Milwaukee Brewers fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for certain remaining home games at a reduced price. The team will hold a “flash sale” for Terrace Reserved tickets at American Family Field. The sale will take place Wednesday from 9 a.m.-11:59 p.m. During the sale, tickets will be available for $6. Montreal at Tampa Bay (TB leads 3-1)
Aaron Rodgers and Bryson DeChambeau beat Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson in “The Match” Tuesday. In the fourth edition of the charity match, Rodgers sank a 10-foot birdie on the 16th hole for the win. Rodgers had birdies on the 9th, 10th and 11th holes, giving him and DeChambeau a three-hole lead. During the event, Rodgers was asked about his status with the Packers and if he would be quarterback for the Week 1 opener against the Saints on September 12th and said he didn’t know. “The Match” raised $2.6 million for My Brother’s Keeper, and provided 6,300,000 meals to Feeding America.
UW-Green Bay has named its next athletics director. Josh Moon has been named the 10th Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at UWGB. Moon, an athletics administrator with more than 18 years in collegiate athletics, has spent the last nine years as the Director of Athletics at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He grew up in Wautoma, attended UW-La Crosse for his bachelor’s degrees in Exercise and Sport Science and Business Administration. He earned his Master’s in Administration with a concentration on Sports Administration from Central Michigan University. He will step into his new role Aug. 1. A press conference to introduce Moon to the Green Bay community will be held on Monday, July 12 at 11 a.m. on Carol’s Court at the Kress Events Center.
The Packers on Tuesday announced that Training Camp will begin on Wednesday, July 28th, at 10:10 a.m. Team veterans are supposed to report for camp on July 27th. If quarterback Aaron Rodgers does not show up, he will be fined $50,000 for every day he is absent. Those fines are not forgivable by the team, according to NFL rules. As in the past, practices are scheduled to take place at Ray Nitschke Field and Packers Family Night will be at Lambeau Field. All practices will be open to the public and will take place at 10:10 a.m.
