Khris Middleton scored 38 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo added 30 and the Milwaukee Bucks never trailed in a 104-89 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night to force a decisive seventh game in their second-round playoff series. Game 7 will be Saturday night in Brooklyn. The home team has won each of the first six games in this series. Milwaukee never trailed and broke the game open by going on a 14-0 run that started with less than 8 1/2 minutes left. Middleton answered every Brooklyn comeback attempt and had 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals to go along with the highest scoring total of his playoff career. Antetokounmpo had 17 rebounds. The Bucks shot just 7 of 33 from 3-point range but made up for it by outscoring the Nets 26-4 in fast-break points.
Milwaukee bounced back two nights after blowing a 17-point lead in a 114-108 Game 5 loss at Brooklyn that featured an epic 49-point, 17-rebound, 10-assist performance from Kevin Durant. Durant had 32 points and 11 rebounds Thursday. James Harden added 16 points but still looked as though he was at far less than full strength in his second game since returning from a hamstring injury.
The Bucks owned a 14-point lead early in the second half before Durant again sparked a third-quarter comeback, scoring 10 straight Nets points during one stretch. Brooklyn cut Milwaukee’s lead to 72-67 with 1:27 left in the third when Harden made two free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point shot. Middleton restored Milwaukee’s double-digit advantage by scoring the last six points of the third quarter, including a putback at the buzzer.
Milwaukee extended the lead to 15 early in the fourth quarter, but Brooklyn stormed back again with 10 straight points, as Joe Harris’ 3-pointer made it 82-77 with 8:41 left. Middleton again responded, drawing a foul on Harris while shooting a 3-pointer and making all three free throws. Those free throws started a 14-0 run that included seven points from Antetokounmpo. The two-time MVP capped the spurt by converting an offensive rebound into a dunk with 6:24 left.

Brandon Woodruff (5-3), off to one of the best starts for a pitcher in franchise history, surrendered a grand slam for the first time in his career in the very first inning of the Brewers’ weeklong western road trip. It was the first of back-to-back Rockies home runs in Milwaukee’s 7-3 loss at Coors Field on Thursday. This was not how the Brewers expected their trip to begin, not with their ace on the mound. Woodruff entered the night with the fourth-best ERA in baseball for a qualifier and the sixth-fewest home runs per nine innings, only to allow C.J. Cron’s opposite-field slam on a 97.7 mph fastball with two outs — the sixth grand slam off a Brewers pitcher this season — and Garrett Hampson’s solo shot four pitches later. Five runs later the Brewers were down 5-0 at the end of the first. The Rockies scored two more in the sixth before the Brewers picked up three in the top of the seventh to make it 7-3. German Marquez (5-6) pitched the first six innings, giving up just one hits while striking out two and walking three. The Brewers have now lost four straight.
The Brewers pulled into a tie with the Washington Nationals for the most grand slams allowed in 2021, and, 69 games into the season, the club is already four shy of the dubious franchise record of 10 grand slams off Milwaukee pitchers in 2010. Brewers hitters have yet to hit one this year.
Game two of the four game series is tonight. Corbin Burnes (3-4, 2.27 ERA) starts for the Milwaukee against Colorado Antonio Senzatela (2-7, 4.86 ERA). First pitch is at 7:40 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in he NL Central the Braves shutout the Cardinals 4-0, the Cubs blanked the Mets 2-0 and the Padres beat the Reds 6-4. The Cubs lead the Brewers by a game in the division, the Reds are 5 games out, the Cardinals 4 and the Pirates are 15 games out.
Midwest League
Quad Cities 13, Timber Rattlers 3-The T-Rates play at Quad Cities again tonight.
Although the Dock Spiders took a 1-0 after the first inning, Fond du Lac’s offense would struggle down the stretch while Green Bay’s would find its rhythm to victory. On Thursday night, the Green Bay Booyah defeated the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, 5-1. The Dock Spiders (9-8) will return home on Friday for their first home game in nine days to host the Booyah at 6:35 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field.
The Men’s U.S. Open got underway Thursday in San Diego. Louie Oosthuizen and Russell Henley each shot a 4-under par 67 to share the first round lead. Two other golfers are a stroke behind. Phil Michelson shot a 75 and was 4 strokes over par.
