Sports for June 15th
First they lost James Harden, then Kyrie Irving, and finally the Brooklyn Nets lost their lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Though the series is tied, the Milwaukee Bucks are way ahead in the health category. Down to Kevin Durant as their lone healthy superstar, the Nets limp home to host Game 5 on Tuesday. Coach Steve Nash said Irving won’t play Tuesday because of the sprained right ankle he sustained in Game 4. Harden hasn’t played since the opening minute of Game 1 because of right hamstring tightness. When he returned from the same injury in April, he promptly strained it minutes into his return and missed the next 18 games, so the Nets are being cautious with him.
The Bucks are coming off two straight wins at home, the latest a 107-96 win on Sunday,
NBA Playoffs (Monday)
Atlanta 103, Philadelphia 100 (Series tied at 2-2)
LA Clippers 113, Utah 104 (Series tied at 2-2)
After a slow start Eric Lauer eventually got it going but by that time it was too late as the Brewers lost 10-2 to the Reds at American Family Field Monday night., snapping a four-game Milwaukee winning streak. The Brewers had won 14 of 16 and 17 of their last 21.
Lauer’s early command trouble contributed to a deficit and Milwaukee’s bats went hitless over the final seven frames.
Daniel Vogelbach homered in a third consecutive game against the Reds for a 1-1 tie after one inning and Lauer lifted a sacrifice fly in the second to make it 4-2, but the Brewers couldn’t muster any more offense against Reds starter Vladimir Gutierrez and three relievers. The Brewers’ only baserunner after the second was Christian Yelich, who drew a walk leading off the sixth. Gutierrez is 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four starts for the Reds, including consecutive outings against the Brewers in which he’s allowed a combined four runs in 13 innings.
The Reds, meanwhile, capitalized on their early lead by drawing the lower-leverage wing of the Brewers’ bullpen and doing damage. Eric Yardley pitched a scoreless sixth inning before yielding Joey Votto’s two-run home run in the seventh. Hunter Strickland pitched a scoreless eighth in his Brewers debut, but the Reds scored four runs off left-hander Hoby Milner in the ninth to make it a blowout
Tonight the Reds send right-hander Luis Castillo (2-9, 6.47 ERA) against Brewers left-hander Brett Anderson (2-4, 4.99 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday the Nationals edged the Pirates 3-2, the Mets beat the Cubs 5-2 and the Cardinals downed the Marlins 4-2. The Brewers and Cubs remain tied for first in the division, the Reds are 4 games out, the Cardinals 5 out and the Pirates are 14 ½ games behind.
The Packers start OTA’s today which run through Thursday.
