Waupaca County Man Makes Initial Court Appearance On Reckless Homicide Charge
The 39-year-old Ogdensburg man charged for the death of his 2-year-old son who was killed in a skid steer accident made his initial appearance in Waupaca County court this week. Caleb Schachtschneider was released on a $10,000 signature bond following the hearing on Tuesday. He is charged with second degree reckless homicide. He will return to court on June 21st for a preliminary hearing. He told a responding Sheriff’s deputy that he was using the skid steer to clear manure and had his 2-year-old son in his lap. As he moved to lower the bucket the toddler fell forward and hit his head on a crossbar and it got crushed while the bucket was still being lowered. The boy died later at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Schachtschneider later admitted he had the boy in front of him instead of behind a restraint bar. He also admitted the boy was at his feet and not in his lap.
Madison Man Sentenced In Dodge County For Drug Dealing
A Dodge County judge this week sentenced a 41-year-old Madison man to three years in prison and five years of extended supervision for dealing methamphetamine to support his own habit. Ryan Murray was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped in the City of Beaver Dam last August. When he got out of the vehicle he was sweating profusely, had trouble focusing, and was walking awkwardly. When officers searched him they found a syringe, a baggie with white residue, two baggies of a clear crystal material, a marijuana pipe and a digital scale. The substance officers found tested positive for meth. Murray explained to them he delivered drugs to others to support his own habit.

COVID Cases Dropping
A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says new cases have dropped to a level not seen since the pandemic was gearing up in March of last year. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says there is reason to be optimistic, but people have to continue to get vaccinated against the virus to defeat it. “We went through the darkest, darkest caves there and have come out on the other side, but we still have to be attentive to this. It seems impossible that this is going to blow up again, but there are little hints in places especially where people are not doing that vaccines that it is starting to pick up again.” He notes the 7-day average for cases in the United States is down significantly especially since January because people have been vaccinated, but we have to continue to vaccinate people to ensure that trend doesn’t reverse itself.
Communications Officers Did A Great Job For Ripon
Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says the toughest part of a decision to transfer dispatching to Fond du Lac County was knowing four communications officers working in the city’s dispatch would have to be let go. He says fortunately three of the four applied with Fond du Lac County and will be working for the County’s Communications Center. “Out of the four that unfortunately we lost during this transition three of those four are in the process of looking at employment with the county they have various start dates coming up. The fourth one opted to go in a different direction.” He says the decision to transition to county dispatching had nothing to do with those officers’ abilities, but had had everything to do with upgrades in technology and costs and those types of issues. Wallner feels all the dispatchers they have had over the years have done a great job for the community.
