FDL County Rescinding Public Health Emergency

The COVID-19 health crisis continues, but here’s another sign that things are improving with the pandemic. The Fond du Lac County Board tonight will consider terminating the County’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency due to the coronavirus. The same resolution will also reinstate the 2018 Rules of the County Board, which were suspended due to the pandemic. County Board supervisors and the public are still able to attend County Board meetings via Zoom. Fourteen months ago Governor Tony Evers declared a Public Health Emergency due to COVID-19. Many counties took similar action. The Board meets at 6 pm at the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac.

COVID 19 Unemployment Subsidy Needs To End

Alex Dallman

State Representative Alex Dallman says there is a push at both the federal and state levels to get people back to work by ending COVID-19 subsidies for those collecting unemployment. Dallman says with people getting vaccinated against the coronavirus we’ve reached a point where it is safe to reopen and the best way for the economy to bounce back is get able-bodied people back to work. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says the $300 a week supplemental pay to unemployment has to end to get that to happen. “I know the Congressional Delegation has Tony Evers to stop making those payments and the state legislature myself and my colleagues moving forward in the Republican State Assembly are going to be asking the governor to either send back those funds to the Federal Government or to quit making those payments all together.” He points out a lot of businesses are setting up job interviews just to have people not show for those interviews. Dallman says businesses looking for employees are willing to go above and beyond to accommodate those employees.

Broadband Subsidy

Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says the Federal Government has a program available that subsidizes the cost of broadband. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says the money may not be available for long or it may be available while the pandemic is still an issue. He says people can check at Get Emergency Broadband.org.  He points out there are income guidelines, but if you make less than $99,000 a year or the family makes less than $198,000 a year you should qualify. You also may be eligible if your income is under Federal Housing Poverty guidelines or your family was significantly affected by COVID-19. He says we found out just how important the internet was for our jobs and lives over the past year.

Health Care Heroes Week

Agnesian HealthCare/SSM Health paid tribute to doctors, nurses and other first responders on the frontlines of the pandemic during Health Care Hero Week, which was celebrated this past week. Nicole Gill is the Chief Nursing Officer at both the Ripon Medical Center and Waupun Memorial Hospital. She says the pandemic presented them with a number of difficult challenges and continues to do so over a year later so they wanted to recognize all of those who have had a role in providing health care services in the community. She says also this past week SSM Health released a 37-minute documentary “Behind the Mask” an unprecedented look inside the lives of people touched by the pandemic and the sacrifices they have had to make to treat people. Gill says they are also grateful to the Ripon Area Fire District, Ripon Police and Ripon Guardian Ambulance Service for offering a drive-thru this past week to personally thank their teams.
