St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty became the major leagues’ first seven-game winner this year with a 2-0 victory over Milwaukee on Thursday as the Brewers’ Corbin Burnes extended his streak to 58 consecutive strikeouts before his first walk. Flaherty (7-0) allowed four hits in six innings, struck out six and walked two to help the Cardinals win a three-game series that featured dominant starting pitching. Burnes (2-3) returned from the injured list after a positive test for coronavirus, which he said left him asymptomatic. He opted against getting vaccinated for what he said were personal reasons.
In his first appearance since April 26, Burnes struck out nine among his first 14 outs, giving him 58 strikeouts and no walks this year before he walked Tommy Edman with two outs in the fifth. After starting Edman with a curveball for a called strike, Burnes threw a changeup and three straight cutters, the last with a 3-1 count that sailed high.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Burnes’ 58 strikeouts without a walk were the most by a major league pitcher within the same season since at least 1893, when the mound moved to its current distance from the plate of 60 feet, 6 inches. Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees extended his active streak to 56 strikeouts on Wednesday at Tampa Bay. Cole has walked three this season.
Burnes allowed one run and five hits in five innings with nine strikeouts. Although Burnes has a 1.57 ERA, the Brewers have gone 2-4 in his six starts — scoring a total of one run in the four losses. Alex Reyes remained perfect in 11 save chances by striking out Tyrone Taylor to strand two runners. The Brewers went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Nolan Arenado’s two-out single in the first scored Edman. That marked the only time in this series that either team scored before the sixth inning. Pitcher Ángel Perdomo’s throwing error on a pickoff attempt past first with runners at the corners in the ninth allowed another run to score.
The Brewers open a three-game home series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday. Adrian Houser (3-3, 3.44) starts for the Brewers and Drew Smyly (1-2, 6.12) pitches for the Braves. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Meanwhile OF Christian Yelich will begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday as the 2018 NL MVP recovers from a strained lower back that has caused him to play just one game since April 11. The Brewers sent RHP Zack Godley outright to Nashville, optioned C Luke Maile and RHP Patrick Weigel to Nashville and designated C Jacob Nottingham for assignment.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday, the Giants beat the Pirates 3-1 and the Rockies pounded the Reds 13-8. The Cubs had the day off.
All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo had 40 points, 15 rebounds and six assists and the Milwaukee Bucks wore down the short-handed Indiana Pacers in a 142-133 victory Thursday night. Indiana dressed just 10 players due to injuries and didn’t have a defensive answer for Antetokounmpo, the two-time NBA MVP who made 14 of 18 shots from the field — six on uncontested dunks — and hit 11 of 16 free throws. The Bucks moved within a game of the Brooklyn Nets for the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 playoff seed. Khris Middleton added 22 points, Brook Lopez had 21, and Jrue Holiday finished with 20 points and 14 assists. Antetokounmpo scored 11 points in the pivotal third quarter, when the Bucks outscored the Pacers 40-30 to build a 13-point lead. Four of the seven ruled-out Pacers were starters, then All-Star forward Domantas Sabonis came out after tweaking his left knee in the third quarter. Sabonis had 10 points, 14 assists and six rebounds when he sat down. Despite the lack of bodies, Indiana kept pace for a half with 3-pointers. Justin Holiday hit six in the first quarter as the home team took a 39-38 lead into the break. He didn’t hit one in the second quarter, but the Pacers had 13 3s by halftime and trailed just 69-66. Holiday led the Pacers with 26 points. T.J. McConnell added 23, and Doug McDermott and Oshae Brissett each had 19. The Bucks host Miami Saturday night.
The Green Bay Packers confirm they’ve signed veteran quarterback Blake Bortles. The Packers did not disclose the terms, but it’s a one-year deal according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Packers only had two quarterbacks on their roster: Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. The addition of Bortles brings in a quarterback for the team’s offseason on-field workouts. Rodgers’ former backup Tim Boyle signed a deal this off-season with the Detroit Lions. Following the 2021 NFL Draft, Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur and General Manager Brian Gutekunst said the team planned on adding another quarterback. Rodgers is not expected to join the team for voluntary workouts which start May 24. Bortles has familiarity with Packers Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as the two spent time in Jacksonville together. Last season he spent time on the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams after five seasons with the Jaguars. The Packers noted Bortles started 73 of the 78 games he’s played in, including all three post-season games, and has a passer rating of 80.6 — it goes up to 91.0 in those three post-season games. Bortles hasn’t started a game since 2018. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported earlier this week, the Packers plan on bringing in quarterback Chad Kelly and Kurt Benkert for a tryout during this weekend’s rookie minicamp.
The Milwaukee Brewers announced they’re raising American Family Field to full fan capacity starting Friday, June 25. Thursday’s announcement comes two days after the Brewers announced plans to raise capacity at home games to 50%. That change starts this Saturday. Right now, the Brewers are selling single-game tickets for games through May 27. The Brewers say they’ll announce plans Friday for single-game ticket sales and promotions for the remaining games through September 26. Sales of group ticket packages are available right now at www.mlb.com/brewers/tickets/group-tickets or (414) 902-4477. Sales of season and partial-season packages are also available. The Brewers had been filling to the stadium to 25% of capacity. The Milwaukee Bucks similarly announced this week they were increasing capacity at Fiserv Forum to 50% for the NBA playoffs.
Wisconsin wildlife officials are preparing to draft regulations that would prohibit hunting wolves at night and shorten the window for registering kills after hunters blew past their quota in February. The Trump administration removed wolves from the endangered species list in January. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was preparing to hold a hunt in November as per statutory requirements but a judge forced the department to launch the season in February. State-licensed hunters killed 218 wolves, almost 100 animals more than their quota. The DNR’s policy board is set to vote May 26 to schedule a hearing on a proposal to rework wolf hunting rules. Revisions could include barring hunting wolves at night and tighter deadlines for registering kills.
