Didi Gregorius hit his eighth career grand slam and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Wednesday night for their third straight win. The Phillies won three straight games for the first time since they started the season 4-0. Enyel De Los Santos — on the lineup card for this one — left two runners stranded to end the eighth. José Alvarado returned from a two-game suspension for triggering a bench-clearing incident and worked a scoreless ninth for his second save. Brandon Kintzler (2-1) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.  Gregorius’ slam off Freddy Peralta (3-1) highlighted a five-run first inning, and six pitchers preserved the win. Gregorius has three grand slams in 86 career games with the Phillies. Rhys Hoskins hit an RBI single in the first, and Peralta allowed five runs over the first five batters. But the Brewers rallied on another chilly, windy night at Citizens Bank Park. Avisail Garcia hit an RBI single in the third inning that was almost more, but a replay review overturned a safe call at the plate. More than 10,000 fans cheered each time a replay showed Daniel Vogelbach was out on center fielder Odubel Herrera’s throw, and a brief review took the run off the board. Tyrone Taylor connected for a pinch-hit homer in the fifth against Chase Anderson, and Garcia added a two-run single off Jojo Romero that cut it to 5-4. Taylor has two pinch-hit homers this season and three overall. Anderson, who was 38-27 with a 3.83 ERA in four seasons with the Brewers from 2016-19, departed after 4 1/3 innings. Matt Moore — the fourth Phillies pitcher — tossed a scoreless seventh in his first appearance since April 17 after going on the COVID-19 injured list.

The Phillies send RHP Zack Wheeler (2-2, 3.49 ERA) to the mound against Milwaukee RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-0, 1.80 ERA) on Thursday. Woodruff has allowed only one earned run in 18 career innings against the Phillies.  First pitch is at 12:05 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Meanwhile, infielder Mark Mathias, who hasn’t played all season after getting hurt in the spring, tweeted he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. … INF Daniel Robertson (concussion) is close to a return.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wednesday, the Reds shutout the White Sox 1-0, the Cardinals beat the Mets 4-1, the Cubs edged the Dodgers 6-5 and the Padres beat the Pirates 4-2.

The Orioles John Means was nearly perfect against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park, as the lefty threw the O’s first solo no-hitter since 1969 in a 6-0 win.  The third no-hitter in MLB this season is also the 10th in franchise history, sixth since the Orioles moved to Baltimore in 1954, and first in MLB history in which the opposing team did not record a walk, a hit by pitch or an error. This according to the Elias Sports Bureau.   Striking out 12 without a walk, Means’ only baserunner came when Sam Haggerty reached on a dropped third strike in the third. Haggerty was immediately thrown out attempting to steal second; Means then retired the next 19 in order, facing the minimum.

Jrue Holiday scored 29 points and the Milwaukee Bucks withstood a triple-double from Russell Westbrook and edged the Washington Wizards 135-134 on Wednesday night. Westbrook had 29 points, 17 assists and 12 rebounds for his 179th career triple-double, but the Wizards still lost for just the fourth time in their last 17 games. He’s just two shy of Oscar Robertson, whose 181 career triple-doubles are the highest recorded total in NBA history. Westbrook has a league-leading 33 triple-doubles this season, including five in his last six games. The only time Westbrook missed out on a triple-double during this six-game stretch came Saturday when he had 42 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in a 125-124 loss to Dallas. Bradley Beal scored 42 points and hit a 3-pointer that cut Milwaukee’s lead to 135-134 with 5.3 seconds left. Westbrook got a steal in the final second, but Garrison Mathews’ desperation shot from over 50 feet away didn’t connect.  Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 23 for the Bucks before fouling out with 1:54 left. Donte DiVincenzo scored 19, Pat Connaughton had 16 and Bryn Forbes added 14 as the Bucks won their fourth straight. Khris Middleton didn’t play due to a sore left knee as the Bucks played one night after beating the Brooklyn Nets 124-118.  The Bucks host the Houston Rockets on Friday as they try to gain revenge after falling 143-136 in Houston on April 29.

Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre opened up about the drama surrounding the team and MVP Aaron Rodgers. Favre appeared on ESPN Milwaukee’s Wilde & Tausch show Wednesday.  Rodgers had expressed displeasure with Packers GM Brian Gutekunst and has apparently threatened not to come back to the team. Gutekunst says he has no plans to trade Rodgers and that he remained confident the three-time MVP would play for the Packers again.

“I just don’t see him coming back and saying, ‘alright let’s bury the hatchet, whatever caused the rift,’” said Favre. “His rift isn’t with the fans, nor the players. It’s with the front office. So will he just swallow his pride and come in? Maybe. But I just don’t see that happening.”

Favre is no stranger to drama with the Packers front office. Some fans have compared the Rodgers situation to “Favre Watch” in 2008. That’s when No. 4 announced his retirement, but later said he wanted to keep playing. The Packers moved on with Aaron Rodgers and traded Favre to the Jets. Favre would finish off his career with the Minnesota Vikings. It’s taken years for hard feelings to subside between Favre and the Packers. Favre said he exchanged a text with Rodgers, but they’ve not had a deep conversation about the matter.
