Death At The Green Lake County Jail

A 43-year-old woman being held in the Green Lake County Correctional Facility died last Friday during a medical episode. Green Lake EMS was paged to the facility at 8:34 pm. Deputies also responded to assist and life-saving measures were administered, but the woman died at the scene.  The death is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office, Corrections Department, and County Coroner’s Office.

Dodge County Fatal Accident Update

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the 60-year-old man killed in a UTV rollover accident northeast of Watertown late Saturday night. Sheriff’s officials say Otto Abolins of rural Ashippun was heading north on Monroe Road in the Town of Lebanon when his UTV left the road on the right shoulder and overturned in a marshy ditch. Abolins was ejected from the UTV. He was not wearing a seatbelt or helmet, and alcohol use was believed to be a factor in the accident. A dog was a passenger, but wasn’t hurt and was released to family. The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the DNR.

Mercury Marine Impact

According to a new study Mercury Marine has more than a $5 billion annual economic impact on the Fond du Lac community-an increase of more than $1 billion per year from five years ago. The study shows that Mercury continues to be one of the top employers in the state of Wisconsin, now employing nearly 4,000 people at its global headquarters in Fond du Lac. Mercury’s employment in April 2020 was more than double what it was during the recession of 2009 and is currently close to triple that number.  Since 2008, Mercury has invested more than $1.5 billion in Research and Development and expansion to its global headquarters in Fond du Lac.

Decorative Fixtures On Oshkosh Bridge Replaced

Globe decorative fixtures for the Cooper Wells Bridge in Oshkosh’s Menominee Park stolen a couple years ago have been replaced. One of the original globe fixtures and pieces of a second were taken. Replacement efforts were made with sensitivity for staying true to the historic fixtures. The replacement globes were to cost nearly $10,000, an unplanned expense. A generous anonymous donor came to rescue offering to pay for the replacement globes and pieces. The globes are now installed on Menominee Park’s Cooper Wells Bridge.                      

First Hundred

Congressman Glenn Grothman says there was a lot of activity and executive orders during President Biden’s first 100 days, but a couple of things concern him about them.  He says the $2 trillion stimulus bill added to the mounting national debt and there were other forms of runaway spending. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah is worried about the inflation the county is seeing with the cost of everything going up.  He’s also concerned about the divisiveness the president is creating by suggesting we have a problem with racism in this country.

Drownings Were Difficult For Family And Searchers

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says they had hoped for a better outcome when two Fond du Lac men disappeared while canoeing on Lake Winnebago at the end of March. But Lake conditions remained unstable with winds that day and during the search gusting from 30 to 45 miles an hour. Meanwhile the families and friends of Dakota Goldapske and Michael Gohde gathered along the shoreline hoping for the best. Waldschmidt says they were able to recover the bodies of the two men and expressed their condolences to the family. Waldschmidt says Lake Winnebago offers many great recreational opportunities, but it can be dangerous no matter what time of year it is

Working On Middle School Transition

As the school year winds down officials in the Rosendale-Brandon School District will by working to transition the Brandon Middle School to Rosendale Intermediate School as the middle school closes. District Superintendent Wayne Weber says Middle School Principal Leanne Greff will become the principal at Rosendale Intermediate School for fourth through eighth grade students. Staff has also been busy working on the transition. Weber says they want to make sure they keep what has been working in both schools. In February the school board voted to close the Brandon Middle School due to dwindling enrollment.
