A.J. Pollock and Matt Beaty took out their frustrations on the Milwaukee Brewers’ injury-riddled pitching staff and made franchise history for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Pollock drove in eight runs and Matt Beatty drove in seven, with both players hitting early grand slams in a startling power show that sent the Dodgers over the Brewers 16-4 on Sunday.
The World Series champion Dodgers won for just the second time in their last eight games.
“As a team, we just needed to be able to breathe a little bit,” Pollock said. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks for us.”
Pollock homered twice and doubled while Beaty went 4 of 6 and scored three times. Their slams came against Alec Bettinger, who gave up 11 runs in his big league debut after never pitching above Double-A. This was the first time the Dodgers had two players with at least seven RBIs in the same game. The last time it happened for any MLB team was on Aug. 22, 2007, when Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez each had seven RBIs for the Texas Rangers in a 30-3 blowout of the Baltimore Orioles.
The last time two Dodgers hit grand slams in the same game came when Adrian Beltre and Shawn Green did it in a 12-3 victory over the Florida Marlins on May 21, 2000. Pollock’s eight RBIs matched the highest single-game total by any player in the history of American Family Field, which opened in April 2001 as Miller Park. He shares the record with Josh Willingham (2009) and Yasmani Grandal (2015). All three did it as visiting players.
Chris Taylor scored five runs, going 3 for 3 to help the Dodgers pull out of their collective slump. Jacob Nottingham hit two homers for the Brewers, who reacquired him from Seattle earlier in the day. The Mariners had claimed Nottingham off waivers from the Brewers last week. Dodgers starter Julio Urias (4-0) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out 10 and walked none. The Brewers were seeking to sweep a four-game series from the Dodgers for only the second time. Milwaukee recorded a four-game sweep at Dodger Stadium in May 2012. Bettinger (0-1) allowed 11 runs on 11 hits and two walks in four innings. He hit a batter and struck out none — he did, however, retire Dodgers star Mookie Betts in all three at-bats.
OF Christian Yelich and OF Lorenzo Cain are expected to return to action during the Brewers’ upcoming series in Philadelphia. President of baseball operations David Stearns said it’s possible they could be ready Monday. Yelich hasn’t played since April 11 due to a lower back strain. Cain is recovering from a left quad strain and last played on April 13.
The Brewers: are at at Philadelphia on Monday to start a four-game series that opens a seven-game trip. Scheduled starters are Adrian Houser (2-2, 3.65) for the Brewers and Vince Velasquez (0-0, 6.57) for the Phillies. First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday, the Cardinals blanked the Pirates 3-0 and the Reds edged the Cubs 13-12 in 10 innings.
Two of the top teams in the NBA’s Eastern Conference met Sunday in Milwaukee and the Bucks came away with a 114-111 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with 49 points as the third place Bucks held off Brooklyn. Kevin Durant finished with 42 for the Nets. Khris Middleton chipped in with 28 for Milwaukee. First-place Philadelphia and the second place Nets have already clinched playoff spots. With the win, Milwaukee is 2 ½ game behind the Nets and three games in back of the 76ers. The Bucks are off today before hosting the Nets again Tuesday night.
The NFL Draft concluded its third day on Saturday. The draft, especially for the Packers, was overshadowed by reports, which came to light Thursday afternoon, that quarterback Aaron Rodgers does not want to return to Green Bay. He has major disagreements with General Manager Brian Gutekunst that started last year with the team’s first-round selection of quarterback Jordan Love. Reportedly he wants Gutekunst to be fired. Coach Mat LaFleur said he wants to do everything he can to make sure the three-time MVP stays in Green Bay. When asked what he’ll do if Rodgers doesn’t return, LaFleur said he doesn’t even want to think about that. There will be a lot more coming from 1265 Lombardi Avenue on that situation.
Meanwhile, the Packers had a busy Saturday, as they drafted six players during the third day of the NFL Draft.
Out of those six players, team officials added line backers and tackles, as well as one corner back and one running back. Among those include former Bay Port High School standout and Wisconsin Badger offensive tackle Cole Van Lanen, who was the team’s seventh pick, and was selected as 214 overall. Van Lanen, who is 6′5 and 308 pounds, was chosen in the sixth round, as was Boston College inside linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, the #220 overall pick. Officials say Van Lanen played in 45 games, with 19 starts at left tackle, helping the Badgers rank third in the nation. McDuffie, who is 6′1 and 220 pounds, has previously been named to the All-ACC second-team.
Earlier in the day, the team first chose tackle/guard Royce Newman from Mississippi, overall pick #142. The Packers say Newman, who is 6′5 and weighs 310 pounds, started all 10 games at right tackle, and allowed two sacks in 430 pass blocks.
Following Newman, the Packers decided to pick up 6′4, 330 pound Tedarrell (T.J.) Slaton, a defensive tackle from Florida, and 5′10, 184 pound corner Shemar Jean-Charles from Appalachian State.
The Packers first pick Thursday was cornerback Eric Stokes from Georgia. On Friday, they picked Center/Guard Josh Myers from Ohio State in the second round, who is expected to take over for Corey Linsely, who signed with San Diego in the off-season. Later in the third round, Green Bay chose wide receiver Amari Rodgers from Clemson. Green Bay ended with nine picks in this year’s draft.
