Adrian Houser pitched effectively into the sixth inning and hit his first career home run, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Miami Marlins 5-4 on Tuesday night. Houser began the day 2 for 28 (.071) with 21 strikeouts in his career at the plate. With two outs and no one on base in the second, he lined the first pitch from Daniel Castano over the wall in center field. Houser also put down a sacrifice bunt that helped score a run. Houser (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits in 5 2-3 innings, striking out seven and walking one.
Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save in five chances. He has not allowed a run this season in eight appearances. Tyrone Taylor drove in three runs for Milwaukee. He followed Houser’s homer with his own home run. Milwaukee took a 4-3 in the lead in the fifth on a triple by Keston Hiura and RBI double by Luis Urias off John Curtiss (2-1). The Brewers added an unearned run in the sixth when Pablo Reyes reached on an error and later scored on Taylor’s single. Jon Berti opened the seventh with a homer off Brent Suter to pull Miami within 5-4. J.P. Feyereisen came on for Suter and struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh and Devin Williams pitched a scoreless eighth. Jesus Aguilar, who hit 35 home runs with Milwaukee in 2018, brought Miami even at 2- hen he opened the fourth with his fourth homer.
The Brewers have not announced a starter for today’s series finale against the Marlins. Manager Craig Counsell said it would not be RHP Patrick Weigel, recalled Tuesday from the alternate training site. RHP Sandy Alcantara (0-2, 3.34 ERA) will be making his sixth start for the Marlins. First pitch is at 12:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Catcher Manny Pina was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left big toe and catcher Luke Maile was recalled from the alternate training site. INF Daniel Robertson was placed on the seven-day concussion IL, and OF Corey Ray was recalled.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday, the Pirates edged the Royals 2-1, the Braves shut out the Cubs 5-0, the Cardinals downed the Phillies 5-2 and the Reds nipped the Dodgers 6-5.
Giannis Antetokounmpo had 29 points and 12 rebounds, Brook Lopez added 22 points and the Milwaukee Bucks held off the Charlotte Hornets 114-104 on Tuesday night to avoid a sweep of the teams’ regular-season series. Kris Middleton scored 17 points and Jrue Holiday chipped in with 12 points and 10 assists for the Bucks, who bounced back from a 111-104 loss to the short-handed Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. Devonte Graham scored 25 points and Miles Bridges added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who had their two-game win streak snapped.
The two-time NBA MVP played with aggression, finishing 11 of 19 from the field and also dishing out eight assists. He got fired up midway through the game when he felt Charlotte’s P.J. Washington tried to trip him after Antetokounmpo stole the ball from him. Milwaukee built a 62-45 halftime lead behind 15 points and eight rebounds from Antetokounmpo while the Bucks’ defense held the Hornets to 4-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc. The Hornets beat the Bucks by 12 at home in January, and then by eight on April 9th in Milwaukee. The Bucks continue their four-game trip at Rockets on Thursday night.
The NCAA Board of Governors voted Tuesday to give President Mark Emmert a two-year contract extension through 2025. Emmert’s contract was set to expire in 2023, but the board voted unanimously to extend his deal, the NCAA said in a statement. The announcement comes less than a month after the NCAA and Emmert drew sharp criticism for inequities between the women’s and men’s Division I basketball tournaments. Exactly one month ago, Board of Governors chairman Jack DeGioia told AP the board was satisfied with Emmert’s handling of the basketball tournament issues and his overall performance. Emmert has also been facing scrutiny and political pressure for the NCAA’s inability to move forward with proposed reforms to its rules prohibiting athletes from earning money off their names, images and likenesses. Emmert has been NCAA president since November 2010, when he succeeded the late Myles Brand. Only Walter Byers (1951-1988) has headed the NCAA longer than Emmert. According to the NCAA’s federal tax returns, Emmert made $2.7 million during 2018, USA Today reported last year.
