Sports for April 27th
Trevor Rogers pitched six spotless innings, Corey Dickerson finished a triple shy of the cycle and the Miami Marlins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-0 on Monday night. Dickerson drove in three runs, two against Brewers starter Corbin Burnes (2-2), who had only allowed one earned run over four outings this season. Since giving up that one run — a homer by Twins outfielder Byron Buxton on April 3 — Burnes had tossed 18 scoreless innings, striking out 29 without walking a batter while allowing a total of seven hits. He struck out nine Monday, giving him 49 for the season, and still hasn’t issued a walk in 29 1/3 innings. He needs three more strikeouts without a walk his next time out to break a record set in 1893. While Burnes was having an uncharacteristically “bad” outing, at least by his own standards this season, Rogers (3-1) did his best Burnes impression by striking out seven Milwaukee batters without a walk.
Burnes had struck out six when former teammate Jesus Aguilar reached on a one-out single in the fourth. After Garett Cooper struck out, Dickerson doubled to left field to give Miami a 1-0 lead. It was still 1-0 when Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off the sixth with a ground-rule double down the right-field line. Chisholm scored when Miguel Rojas followed with a base hit up the middle and, after Aguilar singled, Cooper doubled to center. That put runners at second and third for Dickerson, who made it 4-0 with an RBI single that ended Burnes’ night. Drew Rasmussen got Milwaukee out of the inning without further damage. Miami padded its lead in the eighth when Dickerson hit a solo shot for his first home run of the season and Jose Devers added a sacrifice fly. Cooper tacked on another with a solo homer to center off Angel Perdomo in the ninth.
The series continues Tuesday night with Brewers RHP Adrian Houser (1-2, 3.32 ERA) and Miami LHP Daniel Castano (0-1, 3.60) on the mound. Houser has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his first four starts this season, while Castano threw four scoreless innings after allowing three two-out runs in the opening inning his last time out. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
INF Daniel Robertson was held out after taking a pitch off his helmet a day earlier in Chicago. Robertson hadn’t been diagnosed with a concussion nor had he been placed in the concussion protocol, but manager Craig Counsell said the team was watching closely to make sure symptoms don’t develop. … OFs Christian Yelich (back) and Lorenzo Cain (quad) are in a holding pattern as they work their way back from the injured list.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday, the Braves edged the Cubs 8-7, the Phillies shaded the Cardinals 2-1 and the Reds downed the Dodgers 5-3.
The Milwaukee Bucks are back in action tonight playing the Hornets in Charlotte. The Bucks are third in the Eastern Conference, 2 ½ games behind second-place Philadelphia and 3 ½ games in back of first-place Brooklyn. The Bucks lost to the Hawks in Atlanta on Sunday, 111-104. The Hawks outscored the Bucks 41-26 in the final period, including hitting eight 3-pointers in the final seven minutes.
he 2021 fishing season kicks off this weekend in Wisconsin. The DNR says the fishing season will open May 1 without any changes to season dates. All regulations and license requirements still apply. As anglers head out to their favorite fishing locations, the DNR issued the following reminders:
- Always wear life jackets
- Practice safe and sober boat operations
- Release fish responsibly
- Minimize the spread of aquatic invasive species by removing plants and animals from your boat before and after launching, draining all water from compartments, and never move live fish away from any waterbody.
Seven women filed a federal class-action lawsuit against LSU and its leadership Monday, with the university’s former president and athletic director, as well as its athletic fundraising group, among those named as defendants, according to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by ESPN.
According to the 118-page document, the women attended the Baton Rouge campus at some point from 2013 to 2021, and “were victims of sex-based discrimination, including rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and/or stalking, perpetrated by male LSU students.”
The women include three former LSU tennis players, two former student workers in the football recruiting office, a former student and a current student. They allege “a conspiracy” by the defendants to keep them quiet and “deprive them of their constitutional and federal rights in order to protect the reputation and income of LSU athletics.” They are seeking more than $5 million in damages, plus court costs.
