Sports for April 26th

Brandon Woodruff outdueled Jake Arrieta with six dominant innings, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-0 on Sunday.  Woodruff (2-0) allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked two in his first win in 11 career appearances against Chicago. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has permitted one run and six hits in 19 innings covering three starts against the Cubs this year. Luis Urías hit a two-run single during Milwaukee’s five-run ninth, helping the Brewers close out a 5-1 road trip.Chicago finished with four hits, wasting a solid performance by Arrieta on a cold, windy day at Wrigley Field. The game-time temperature was 44 degrees. Arrieta kept the Cubs in the game with six innings of two-hit ball. The right-hander struck out eight and walked three.

Milwaukee got its first run on Travis Shaw’s bases-loaded walk in the first. Arrieta retired 15 in a row after the Brewers’ first four batters reached safely. The Brewers put runners on second and third with no outs in the sixth, but Arrieta (3-2) escaped by striking out Shaw, Keston Hiura and Billy McKinney. Woodruff retired his first nine batters. Ian Happ walked and David Bote singled in the fourth for Chicago’s first baserunners, but Anthony Rizzo struck out and the Brewers turned an inning-ending double play when Kris Bryant struck out and Happ was caught stealing third.Rizzo also struck out for the final out of the sixth, leaving a runner on third.

Meanwhile, an MRI on OF Christian Yelich (lower back strain) showed no major issues. The 2018 NL MVP hasn’t played since April 11th.   Manager Craig Counsell said progress still has to be made before Yelich can get back on the field.  CF Lorenzo Cain (quadriceps strain) worked out on the field Saturday, and Counsell said it went well. … RF Avisaíl García returned to the starting lineup. He rested Saturday after he left the series opener with back tightness.

The Brewers return home tonight as RHP Corbin Burnes (2-1, 0.37 ERA) starts in the opener of a three-game series against Miami. Burnes has 40 strikeouts and no walks in 24 1/3 innings so far this year. LHP Trevor Rogers (2-1, 1.64 ERA) goes for the visiting Marlins. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Sunday, the Pirates beat the Twins 6-2 and the Cardinals downed the Reds 5-2.

Elsewhere in Major League Baseball Sunday, Madison Bumgarner finishes 7 no-hit frames to lead the D-backs to a 7-0 win over the Braves in Game 2 of their doubleheader.

The Oakland A’s 13game winning streak ended Sunday as Austin Hays hit a pair of home runs, starter John Means had another stellar performance and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Athletics 8-1.

Lou Williams sank four 3-pointers in the final seven minutes, including a jumper that gave Atlanta its first lead of the second half, Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 32 points and the Hawks beat the Milwaukee Bucks 111-104 on Sunday night. Williams scored all of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. The Hawks overwhelmed the Bucks with their barrage of eight 3-pointers in the final seven minutes. Williams missed seven shots from the field before his drought-breaking 3 gave Atlanta its first lead of the second half at 85-84 with 6:59 remaining.  Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points with 14 rebounds, but the Bucks couldn’t complete another season sweep of an Eastern Conference rival. Milwaukee settled for two wins in its three-game series against the Hawks one day after a 132-94 rout of Philadelphia completed the sweep of that series.  Khris Middleton had 23 points, and Jrue Holiday had 19 points with 11 assists for Milwaukee. Kevin Huerter scored 20 points as the Hawks ended a streak of six consecutive losses to Milwaukee. John Collins had 18 points for Atlanta, which has won four of its last five and 11 of 14. The Bucks continue a four-game road trip at Charlotte on Tuesday.

Brad Keselowski did it exactly right this time and finally got that last-lap victory, winning in overtime Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway. Keselowski is the ninth driver to win through 10 NASCAR Cup races this season and avenged the embarrassing Team Penske gaffe in the season-opening Daytona 500 when he and teammate Joey Logano triggered a last-lap crash as Keselowski tried to pass Logano for the victory. Keselowski led just one lap, the last one, in a race that featured 35 lead changes among 27 drivers. William Byron was second, Daytona 500 winner Michael McDowell third and Kevin Harvick a season-high fourth. DiBenedetto, who led 28 laps, finished fifth but gave away the win with a late lane change that allowed to Keselowski to surge to the front.
