Dodge County Death Investigation Followup
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department says they will not be releasing the names of the victims in a murder/suicide they were asked to investigate in the City of Watertown. The bodies of a 52-year-old man and 16-year-old boy were found at 909 Country Lane early last Saturday morning. Watertown Police requested the Sheriff’s Office assistance in the investigation due to a conflict of interest. Evidence at the scene indicated the 52-year-old man was responsible for the murder/suicide. Sheriff’s officials say with the state’s new victims’ rights law, Marsy’s Law, the release of the names of those involved is not permitted.
FDL County DA Comments On Jury Verdict In FDL Shooting
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney says a Fond du Lac drug dealer found guilty of shooting and injuring two people had more than two victims. A jury last week found 33-year-old Delaney Watt guilty of 14 out of 16 charges stemming from the shooting at a Fond du Lac apartment building in September of 2018. While shooting at someone who owed him drug money he hit a 17-year-old girl in the back and left a 26-year-old man paralyzed from the waist down for life. Toney says an incident like that can impact an entire community. “When such a brazen act of violence happens in our community, right in the heart of the city of Fond du Lac, that’s something that can affect an entire community and we have to make ensure that we hold those individuals responsible that they are held accountable and that the court system does its job.” Watt will be sentenced next Thursday. He faces a potential maximum penalty of over 200 years in prison and 70 years of extended supervision.
ThedaCare Joins Nationwide Campaign
ThedaCare is collaborating with a coalition of 60 of America’s top hospitals and health care institutions on a nationwide campaign to encourage adults to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Led by Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, the campaign “Get the Vaccine to Save Lives,” is designed to reassure the public that vaccines are safe, effective and necessary to achieve herd immunity and a return to normal activities. The campaign hopes to reach adults who are hesitant to receive a vaccine, including racial and minority ethnic groups and people living in rural communities.
Vaccine Hesitancy Poll
Attitudes toward getting vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus have changed in the last few weeks. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says a Washington Post article talked about a small group of people a Republican Pollster got together to ask what it would take for them to overcome their hesitancy about getting vaccinated. “The takeaway from this meeting is stop talking about the possibility of a booster, don’t bully us if we are a vaccine holdout, and the last person we want to talk to is Dr. Fauci is basically what came out of this group of 17 people.” He says they did have a couple of people on hand to try and talk them into getting the vaccine and some were swayed by their argument. But he says two weeks later those arguments on the benefits of the vaccine didn’t sway anyone. According to one poll 40 percent of Republicans say they are not going to get the vaccine.
Busy Highways Make FDL County Attractive For Business
Envision Greater Fond du Lac President and CEO Sadie Parafiniuk says Fond du Lac County is blessed with being centrally located between Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay all within about an hour’s travel. She says U.S. Highway 151 and 45, Interstate 41 and State Highway 23 all get their share of truck traffic and help lure business to the county. She says State Highways 23 and 26 in the western part of the county is especially busy. “Highway 23 and 26 is one of the busiest traffic count numbers in the region and it is incredibly busy. If you’ve ever gone to Bluemke’s to get ice cream or gas it is always busy.” She says the state highways that run through Ripon have helped draw interest in the City’s industrial park.
Duckling Rescue
Another sign of spring is area fire departments having to rescue baby ducklings that fell into a storm sewer while following their mother around. The Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue Department had its first duck rescue of the season Tuesday morning. A crew of firefighters rescued some ducklings from a storm sewer at 16th and Ellis Streets while their anxious mother watched on. None of the ducklings was injured and they were soon reunited with their Mom. Photos of rescue effort can be seen at the department’s Facebook page.
