Sports for April 15th

Corbin Burnes struck out 10 in six dominant innings and also delivered a two-run single for his first career RBIs as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-0 on Wednesday. Burnes allowed just two hits to continue his sizzling start to the season. His bases-loaded single up the middle capped the Brewers’ four-run outburst in the sixth. The 26-year-old right-hander has knocked home twice as many runs (two) as he has allowed (one) through his first three outings of the year. This marked the franchise-record eighth straight game in which a Brewers starter worked at least five innings while allowing no more than one run. Burnes’ performance helped the Brewers take two of three in the series and gain a measure of revenge one day after an emotionally charged 3-2 loss to the Cubs.

The Cubs had no answers for Burnes. Burnes (1-1) has fanned 30 while allowing only four hits and no walks in 18 1/3 innings. He yielded just one hit in each of his first two starts, but the Brewers lost both games. Although Burnes carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning April 3 against Minnesota, the Brewers mustered just one hit and struck out 17 times in a 2-0 loss to the Twins. Burnes left with a 1-0 lead Thursday at St. Louis, but the Cardinals rallied against Milwaukee’s bullpen to win 3-1. This time, Burnes got a bit more help from his teammates.

Jackie Bradley Jr. doubled to lead off the first and scored on Travis Shaw’s single. Shaw moved to third on Avisaíl García’s double and came home on Omar Narváez’s sacrifice fly.  Shaw extended the lead to 3-0 with a homer to left center in the third. The Brewers broke the game open in the sixth as reliever Shelby Miller didn’t retire any of the five batters he faced.

F Lorenzo Cain went on the 10-day injured list with a strained left quadriceps, and OF Christian Yelich missed a third straight game with a sore back. The Brewers recalled OF Tyrone Taylor.

The Brewers are off Thursday before beginning a three-game home series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Scheduled starters are Adrian Houser (1-1, 1.80) for Milwaukee and JT Brubaker (1-0, 1.93) for Pittsburgh.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wedensday, the Nationals blanked the Cardinals 6-0,  the Giants shut out the Reds 3-0 and the Pirates beat the Padres 5-1.

White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon no-hit the Cleveland Indians Wednesday night at home 8-0 for the 20th no-hitter in team history.  He had a perfect game going, retiring the first 25 batters, before hitting  Roberto Pérez with a 1-2 back-foot slider in the ninth to lose an attempt at the fourth perfect game in White Sox history.

Khris Middleton had 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in three quarters, as the Milwaukee Bucks breezed to a 130-105 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. Brook Lopez added 18 points and eight rebounds, Jrue Holiday pitched in 15 points and three steals, and the Bucks built a lead as big as 30 points early in the fourth quarter on the way to their second consecutive blowout. After losing six of nine games, the Bucks beat Orlando 124-87 on Sunday. Anthony Edwards scored 24 points on 5-for-11 shooting from 3-point range for the Timberwolves, who have lost 11 of their past 15 games. The Bucks played without the two-time reigning NBA Most Valuable Player award winner, Giannis Antetokoumpo, because of left knee soreness for the sixth straight game. They’re 3-3 without him in this stretch. The Timberwolves were also missing their best player, Karl-Anthony Towns, for the second consecutive game. His absence was for personal reasons, surrounding the one-year anniversary of the death of his mother due to COVID-19. After trailing Brooklyn by as many as 45 points in a 127-97 loss on Tuesday to a Nets team missing stars James Harden and Kyrie Irving, the Timberwolves were just as overmatched against another Eastern Conference power with Towns out of the lineup. The Bucks scored 45 points in the third quarter, their second-highest period of the season that allowed coach Mike Budenholzer to rest Middleton, Holiday and Lopez for the final period with a back-to-back game looming against Atlanta. Milwaukee, which is in control of the No. 3 seed for the playoffs, entered the evening with a three-game deficit behind Brooklyn and Philadelphia. The conference co-leaders were set to play on Wednesday night. The game was played with the seats empty with the tip-off time moved up 3 1/2 hours as a safety precaution, given ongoing tension in the Twin Cities area following the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man. The Bucks visit the Hawks tonight, their first of two trips to Atlanta in an 11-day span.

University of Wisconsin guard Brad Davison is coming back for another year. The Badgers announced his return Wednesday afternoon on Twitter. The message included a statement from Davison, who will be coming back for his fifth season at UW, saying “there is no place I would rather be than Madison!”

Davison played in over 30 games each season over the past four years, averaging over ten points per game over that period. A senior going into this previous season, Davison will be taking advantage of NCAA rules offering players whose seasons were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic an extra year of eligibility.

Aaron Rodgers continues to help small businesses in Northern California as he hosts “Jeopardy!” Thanks to his participation, Jeopardy has donated more than $150,000 to a nonprofit selected by Rodgers. The money matches the money won by Jeopardy winners. “Thanks to all three of you, “Jeopardy!” is donating $27,401 again to the North Valley Community Fund,” Rodgers said during an episode that aired on Wednesday. “This will help small businesses in southern California who have been affected by COVID-19. It is very much appreciated. Thank you.”
