Sports for April 13th

Pinch-hitter Luis Urías drove in three runs with a go-ahead double and the Milwaukee Brewers scored six times in the sixth inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3 on Monday night. Freddy Peralta (2-0) struck out 10 over six innings of two-hit ball for the victory. Milwaukee has won five of six, while the Cubs lost for the fifth time in six games. After being shut out on one hit by Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay (0-2) through five innings, the Brewers loaded the bases to start the sixth. After the Cubs cut down a runner at the plate, Alzolay, who had retired 11 straight coming into the inning, gave way to reliever Andrew Chafin. Urías, who entered 2 for 27 on the season, batted for Daniel Vogelbach and slapped a shot just inside the left-field line to clear the bases. It was Urías’ first career pinch hit in six at-bats.  Urías later scored on a wild pitch to grow the lead to 4-1. Jackie Bradley Jr. knocked in another run with a triple and Keston Hiura added an RBI single as the Brewers sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.  Peralta gave up just one run, a fourth-inning homer by Kris Bryant. The right-hander walked two and reached double digits in strikeouts for the fourth time in his career, the last coming in April 2019.  Josh Hader got two outs for his first save of the season. Hader came on after Javier Báez drove in a pair of runs with a one-out double. The Cubs have had five hits or fewer in seven of their first 10 games. Alzolay gave up five runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one. Chafin allowed three runs while getting just one out. He threw a wild pitch and hit a batter.

The two teams meet again tonight.  RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 3.00 ERA) starts for the Cubs against Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff (0-0, 2.45). First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

The Cubs announced before the game that bullpen coach Chris Young tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. First base coach Craig Driver already was away from the team following a positive test. Relief pitchers Brandon Workman, Jason Adam and Dan Winkler were placed on the COVID-19 injured list. There was no word on whether their designation was the result of a positive test or contact tracing.

Brewers Christian Yeliich sat out after leaving Sunday’s game with back soreness and is day-to-day.  Bradley started in left field, replacing Yelich, for the first time since 2015. 3B Travis Shaw, who also exited Sunday’s game after fouling a pitch off his shin, returned to action.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday, the Padres beat the Pirates 6-2, the Nationals downed the Cardinals 5-2 and the Reds blanked the Giants 3-0.

The first public baseball at Fox Cities Stadium in a year and a half will have to wait at least another day. The Milwaukee Brewers alternate training site scrimmage that was set for Monday at 5:30 p.m. was  canceled. In a press release issued by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, cool and wet conditions were cited as reasoning for the canceled scrimmage. Some good news, however, is the Brewers and Timber Rattlers have now announced their scheduled workouts through April 18. Tuesday through Friday, there will be workouts, batting practice and a simulated game from 2:30-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will have the same scheduled activities from 1-3:30 p.m. Simulated games will be used rather than full scrimmages. These simulated games will allow pitchers and batters to build up for the season with live game situations, except some half-innings may not have certain defensive positions filled. Single session passes for Tuesday through next Sunday are $5 and can be purchased at the Timber Rattlers Box Office, or online on the team’s website. An alternate site all-season pass is available for $50, which provides one ticket for every day the Brewers Alternate Training Squad will take the field. A $10 food and beverage credit is also included in the pass. These passes can be ordered on the Timber Rattlers website, stopping at the Timber Rattlers Box Office, or calling (920) 733-4152. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will open their season May 4 against the Beloit Snappers.

The Milwaukee Bucks are off again today before resuming action Wednesday night at Minnesota against the Timberwolves.  The Bucks (33-20) are in third place in the Eastern Conference, three games behind Brooklyn and 3 ½ games in back of Philadelphia.  Minnesota (14-40) is last in the Western Conference.  Giannis Antetokounmpo has missed the last five games for the Bucks with a sore leg, but his status is improving.

A member of the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl I team is dead at the age of 83. William “Red” Mack died April 8 at his home in South Bend, Indiana, according to his obituary. Mack was born in Oconto in 1937. He went to high school in Pennsylvania and played football at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. Mack spent his pro football career with the Packers, Steelers, Eagles and Falcons.  In 1966, he was signed by the Green Bay Packers. Team historian Cliff Cristl says Mack was a fan favorite on special teams in the NFL Championship and Super Bowl I. The Super Bowl season was his last in the NFL. After his football career, he settled in South Bend and worked at the Bendix Corporation for 35 years, according to Mack’s obituary. He was a youth sports coach and volunteer.
