Sports for April 12th

Avisaíl García homered for the second day in a row, Travis Shaw and Manny Piña also connected and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 on Sunday. García, who homered and drove in five runs in a 9-5 win Saturday, and Shaw hit early drives that helped the Brewers build a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Brett Anderson (1-1) tossed five effective innings for Milwaukee, which has won four of five. Austin Dean had a two-run double for the Cardinals, who have lost two in a row after a four-game winning streak.  The Brewers scored four times in the first off Daniel Ponce de Leon (1-1) in batting around for the first time this season. Lorenzo Cain began the game with a first-pitch double, Daniel Vogelbach followed with an RBI single and García homered. Shaw hit a three-run homer in the second off Ponce de Leon in the second. Shaw left the game as a precautionary measure after fouling a ball off his shin in a fourth-inning plate appearance. Milwaukee outfielder Christian Yelich left the game in the second inning with back soreness. Piña added a two-run homer in the ninth. Anderson allowed one run on four hits. He struck out one and walked two. St. Louis newcomer Nolan Arenado extended his hitting streak to nine games with a first-inning single.   RHP Freddy Peralta (1-0, 0.00) will take on Chicago Cubs RHP Adbert Alzolay (0-,1, 7.20) in the first of a three-game series on Monday in Milwaukee. Peralta is 3-1 with a 3.78 ERA in seven lifetime appearances against Chicago. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game will be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Sunday, the Pirates beat the Cubs 7-1 and the Diamondbacks blanked the Reds 7-0.  Milwaukee is 5-4 and in second place in the division, a game-behind the first place Reds, who are 6-1.

Khris Middleton scored 21 points, Bobby Portis added 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds off the bench and the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Orlando Magic 124-87 on Sunday night to end a three-game losing streak. Milwaukee was again without star Giannis Antetokounmpo, but it mattered little as Middleton shot 8 of 13 from the field and added eight rebounds and five assists to help the Bucks lead wire to wire. Middleton also hit two 3-pointers to give him 1,000 for his NBA career. Milwaukee shot 48.9% and made 19 3-pointers to beat the Magic for the sixth straight time — five of those wins coming in Orlando. The Magic shot 37.2% and hit only 8 of 36 3s.  Jrue Holiday added 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists for Milwaukee, which never saw its lead dip below 13 points in the second half. Milwaukee pulled its starters early in the fourth period and extended its lead to as much as 37 late. Brynn Forbes added 13 points off Milwaukee’s bench. Pat Connaughton made all four of his shots and added 11 points. Mo Bamba scored a career-best 21 points for Orlando, which lost its fifth straight game and 18th in 22 games. Bamba, who has gotten significantly more playing time since the team waived Khem Birch, shot 8 of 11 overall and 5 of 6 from 3-point range. He topped his previous high of 19 points set two games ago. Antetokounmpo missed his fifth straight game with a sore left knee, but Mike Budenholzer said the reigning two-time MVP is trending upward. The Bucks are at Minnesota on Wednesday night. Milwaukee (33-20) trails Brooklyn and Philadelphia by three games in the Eastern Conference.

Hideki Matsuyama delivered golf-mad Japan the grandest and greenest prize of all. Ten years after Matsuyama made a sterling debut as the best amateur at Augusta National, he claimed the ultimate trophy Sunday with a victory in the Masters to become the first Japanese winner of the green jacket. Matsuyama closed with a 1-over 73 and a one-shot victory that was only close at the end, and never seriously in doubt after Xander Schauffele’s late charge ended with a triple bogey on the par-3 16th. Will Zalatoris, the 24-year-ld Masters rookie, holed an 18-foot par putt on the last hole for a 70 and was runner-up. Schauffele and Jordan Spieth tied for third at seven-under.
