Nolan Arenado hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning of his home debut with the Cardinals, lifting St. Louis over the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 Thursday as fans returned to Busch Stadium for the first time since 2019. Arenado, a five-time All-Star acquired from Colorado on Feb. 1 after eight seasons with the Rockies, followed a walk to Austin Dean with the score 1-1. Arenado turned on a first pitch 96.6 mph offering from Drew Rasmussen (0-1) and sent the ball 373 feet to left for his second homer this season. Arenado pointed to the St. Louis dugout just before rounding first and screamed as he helped the Cardinals to their fourth straight win, setting off cheers from a crowd limited by coronavirus protocols to 13,328. Adam Wainwright started his sixth home opener, tying the franchise record set by the late Bob Gibson. The Cardinals wore patches with No. 45 on their left sleeves in honor of Gibson, the Hall of Famer who died Oct. 2.
Wainwright, a 39-year-old righthander, allowed one run and five hits in five innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Giovanny Gallegos (2-0) gave the Cardinals their third straight inning of hitless relief, following Ryan Helsley and Andrew Miller. Alex Reyes finished the six-hitter for his third save, allowing a leadoff single to Omar Narváez in the ninth and stranding him at third when Daniel Robertson hit a game-ending flyout. Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes gave up one hit in six scoreless innings, struck out nine and walked none. Travis Shaw had three hits for Milwaukee. Keston Hiura doubled leading off the third to break an 0-for-20 slide that started the season and scored when Wainwright’s pickoff attempt sailed into centerfield and Dylan Carlson, who overran the ball on a play scored a double error. Tyler O’Neill had a tying infield single off Eric Yardley in the seventh.
The Brewers have a rare Friday off-day. St. Louis RHP Carlos Martinez (0-1, 7.20) will face RHP Adrian Houser (0-1, 3.60) in the second of the three-game series on Saturday. Martinez, who will be making his 125th career start, is 6-5 with a 2.23 ERA in 15 starts against the Brewers. Houser has allowed 11 runs in 17 1/3 innings against St. Louis.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Thursday, the Cubs beat the Pirates 4-2 and the Reds were idle.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers held a ballpark opener Thursday, ahead of this year’s baseball season. The free event at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute offered fans games in the “Brews on Third” area, a chance to win autographed items, and treats from the concession stand. The Timber Rattlers are scheduled to start the 2021 season at home against the Beloit Snappers on Tuesday, May 4. The staff says after months of anticipation, they’re excited to get this season underway.
The Bucks lost their second straight game last night in Dallas as the Mavericks picked up a 116-101 victory. Milwaukee, which is playing without Giannis Antetokounmpo, was led by Donte DeVincenzo’s 22 points and Bobby Portis added 20. Josh Richardson led the Mav’s with 26 and Dorian Finney-Smith had 25. Miilwaukee (32-19) remains in third place in the Eastern Conference, three games behind Philadelphia and 3 ½ game in back of first-place Brooklyn. Dallas (27-22) is in seventh place in the Western Conference. The Bucks return to Milwaukee tonight and will host the Charlotte Hornets.
The Masters got underway Thursday at Augusta National Golf Course and Justin Rose made seven birdies and an eagle during a torrid 10-hole stretch for an opening 7-under 65, giving him a 4-shot lead Thursday in conditions that might only get tougher the rest of the way. Seven holes into the tournament Rose was two-over before he started his started his hot stretch with an eagle putt on the par- five 8th. Rose has been a runner-up twice at August including a playoff loss to Sergio Garcia four years ago. Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harmon shot 69’s and are four shots back. Patrick Reed shot a 70, Jordan Spieth a 71 and Jon Rahm a 72. Last year’s champ, Dustin Johnson shot a 74 while three-time champ Phil Mickelson struggled to a three-over 75.
