Sports for April 8th

Lorenzo Cain hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the 10th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 on Wednesday. Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff had a no-hit bid going until Ian Happ led off the seventh with a clean single. It was scoreless until then — after that, the ball began to fly. Cain, who had missed three games with an oblique strain, hit a solo homer leading off the eighth. Joc Pederson tied it with his first home run for the Cubs, a drive in the bottom half off reliever Devin Williams. After automatic runner Daniel Robertson moved to third on a single by pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach in the 10th, Cain drove a 1-1 pitch from Brandon Workman (0-1) to the center-field batter’s eye on a warm afternoon at Wrigley Field. Jason Heyward singled in automatic runner Kris Bryant in the Cubs 10th off J.P Feyereisen. After two walks loaded the bases, Brad Boxberger came on to retire Happ on a fly to short left for the final out and his first save. Woodruff permitted just one hit, struck out eight and walked none in seven innings. Josh Hader (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win. Christian Yelich had three hits, including a double, and walked for Milwaukee. The Cubs finished with only three hits after getting just one in a 4-0 loss to the Brewers on Tuesday night. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks nearly matched Woodruff through six scoreless innings. The Cubs ace allowed four hits, while walking none and fanning six. Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (0-1, 1.42) takes the mound against St. Louis RHP Adam Wainwright (0-1, 20.25) in the Cardinals’ home opener on Thursday afternoon.  First pitch is at 3:15 and the game can be heard on AM “00/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Wednesday, the Reds pounded the Pirates 11-4 and the Cardinals shutout the Marlins 7-0.

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced the return of tailgating. The team says the pre-game tradition will be allowed at all parking lots at American Family Field–with the exception of employee lots. The team put a hold on tailgating due to COVID-19 pandemic. It returns on Monday, April 12. The Brewers host the rival Chicago Cubs. There are plenty of safety rules to follow. Tailgating will be limited to single vehicles for those sitting in the same pod seating for the game. Fans will need to remain near that vehicle and not wander around the parking lot. Only ticketed fans are allowed in the parking lots. All tailgating must end 30 minutes after the game starts. Right now, the stadium is limited to 25 percent capacity. Fans are required to wear masks except when eating and drinking inside the ballpark.

The head of the search committee to pick a successor to retiring Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said the school hopes to make a hire “within a few months.” Peter Miller, the chair of Wisconsin’s athletic board, wouldn’t get more specific than that.  Alvarez announced his retirement Tuesday and said it would take effect at the beginning of July. Wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank has announced the members of a nine-person search committee. Alvarez has been Wisconsin’s athletic director since 2004 and coached Wisconsin’s football team from 1990-2005.

After an off-day Wednesday, the Bucks are back in action tonight in Dallas against the Mavericks.  The Bucks played without Giannis Antetokounmpo in a 122-121 loss at Golden State on Tuesday.  Milwaukee (32-18) is in third place in the Eastern Conference, 2 2/1 games behind Philadelphia and three games in back of Brooklyn.

The Masters gets underway today at Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia.  Dustin Johnson is the defending champion and tees off later this morning.  89 players are participating in this year’s event.

One player who won’t be competing in this year’s is five-time champion. He was injured in an accident earlier this year. On Wednesday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said that speed was the primary cause of Woods’ single-car rollover crash. Woods needed surgery after the accident and returned home in mid-March. Villanueva said Woods was driving between 84 and 87 mph in a 45-mph zone at the time of the crash in Rancho Palos Verdes. Woods’ car struck a sign in the center divider, sheared through a tree and landed in the brush alongside the road. His vehicle struck the tree at 75 mph. Woods  released a statement following the conclusion of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office investigation into his February car crash — but the pro golfer didn’t mention that he was found to have been speeding nearly 40 miles over the speed limit at the time.

Sturgeon spearers had their most successful season in years, according to a season summary the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources released Wednesday. On Lake Winnebago, 12.5% of spearers got a fish, the highest rate since 2015. The total of 1,468 sturgeon speared was the 16th-highest on record. On lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts, spearers nabbed 364 sturgeon, the highest total since the lottery systems was implemented in 2007. The 73.2% success rate was the highest on record. The DNR credited water clarity for the success across the system this year. Additionally, cold weather at the beginning of the season made for strong ice and good travel conditions across the lakes. Aerial counts showed 4,326 shacks on Lake Winnebago on opening weekend. Warmer weather toward the end of the 16-day season led many spearers to pull their shacks off the ice by the final weekend. Five sturgeon speared this year weighted more than 150 pounds, led by the 160.1-pound, 77-inch fish Adam Derksen speared on Lake Winnebago. Spearers took 77 fish weighing more than 100 pounds.
