Sports for April 7th

Freddy Peralta pitched five sharp innings, Travis Shaw hit a three-run homer and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Tuesday night to stop a three-game slide. Peralta (1-0) struck out eight and walked four. Kris Bryant doubled in the fourth for Chicago’s only hit of the game. Shaw connected in the first against Adbert Alzolay (0-1), sending an opposite-field drive deep to left-center. Daniel Vogelbach walked with one out and Christian Yelich singled ahead of Shaw’s first homer of the season. Omar Narvaez added a solo drive in the fourth. He also went deep during the Brewers’ 5-3 loss to the Cubs on Monday night.  Both benches emptied when Brewers reliever Brad Boxberger hit Willson Contreras with a pitch to lead off the Cubs’ half of the ninth. Contreras, who was beaned in the helmet on Monday, started yelling and walking toward the mound, but was steered to first base by teammates. The teams milled around briefly on the left side of the diamond, but quickly returned to their dugouts. Boxberger, who was just activated on Tuesday, then got Anthony Rizzo to ground into a double play. Bryant bounced to third to end the game. After Peralta departed, Brent Suter worked three innings of near-perfect relief, allowing only a walk to pinch hitter Matt Duffy in the eighth. Chicago had its best scoring chance in the fourth, when Bryant doubled and advanced to third on Yelich’s error. But Peralta struck out Joc Pederson and Javier Báez, ending the inning. Alzolay (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits in five innings. Chicago had won three in a row.  Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff (0-0, 6.75 ERA) faces Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 9.00 ERA) on Wednesday afternoon in the series finale. Woodruff and Hendricks are trying to rebound from rough opening-day starts. First pitch is at 1:20 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday the Reds pounded the Pirates 14-1 and the Cardinals beat the Marlins 4-2.

The Milwaukee Brewers have restructured seating plans to allow for more two-person pods at American Family Field. The team says the decision is based on the high demand of two-person pods. The change does not mean an increase in capacity for home games, which remains at 25%.  The changes are available for games through May 2. Pods for groups of four and six are also still available, the team says.

The Milwaukee Brewers have traded infielder Orlando Arcia to the Atlanta Braves.  In return, the Crew receives pitchers Chad Sobotka and Patrick Weigel. The Brewers say RHP Sobotka and RHP Weigel will join the alternate training site at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The 26-year old Arcia has been with the Brewers since 2016. He has a career .244 batting average, 42 home runs and 180 RBI.  Arcia primarily played short stop for the Brewers. This spring, the team moved him to third base.

In the NBA Tuesday night, Milwaukee Bucks were nipped on the road by the Golden State Warriors 122-121.  The Bucks, who played with Giannis Antetokounmpo, were led by Drue Holiday’s 29 points and Khris Middleton chipped in with 28.  The Warriors Steph Curry led all scorers with 41, including 5 of 10 from three point range.  The Bucks, now 32-18,  are tied for second in the Eastern Conference, 2 ½ games behind Brooklyn and Philadelphia.  The Warriors (24-27) are in 10th place in the Western Conference.  Milwaukee is off Wednesday before resuming its road trip Thursday night at Dallas against the Mavericks.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is retiring after a three-decade run in which he transformed the university’s football program and later guided the Badgers to their greatest all-around sports success in school history. The 74-year-old Alvarez announced Tuesday he would retire on June 30. He arrived at Wisconsin in 1990 as football coach and turned one of the Big Ten’s weakest programs into one of its strongest. He became athletic director in 2004 and briefly served in a dual role before stepping down as football coach after the 2005 season.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and fiancée Shailene Woodley held an Instagram Q&A after the MVP’s first day as guest host of Jeopardy! Rodgers, a previous Celebrity Jeopardy! champion, is hosting the game show through April 16. No. 12 is a self-proclaimed Jeopardy! super fan. During the Instagram Q&A, someone asked Rodgers if he plans on quitting football to host Jeopardy! “No, I’m not going to. I just won MVP, I still have a lot left in the tank. I’m still going to play and I’d love to host Jeopardy! at the same time. Jeopardy! films five shows a day, 46 days a year. That’s 230 episodes. I work for six months out of the year. So the other six months, I would have time to probably film 46 days, I think.”
