Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard says he has unfinished business at his alma mater and wouldn’t have felt right leaving after a pandemic-shortened season, even for an opportunity as tempting as his home state’s NFL team. Leonhard was a prime candidate for the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator position and had been offered the job according to multiple reports, but opted to return for a sixth season on Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst’s staff. The Packers instead hired Joe Barry as defensive coordinator.
Nearly 38,000 acres of private land in Wisconsin will be open to hunters this turkey season. The announcement comes via a partnership between the state Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. The partnership allows the DNR to associate with private landowners who lease their land for the public through the Turkey Hunter Access Program and the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program, according to a news release.
The programs provide financial incentives, including annual leases, to private landowners who open their property to public hunting, fishing, trapping and wildlife observation. Eligible land types include grassland, wetland, forestland and sometimes agricultural land, the release says. The 2021 spring turkey season begins April 21.
