31 March 2021 Sports

Sports for March 31st

The NFL is increasing the regular season to 17 games and reducing the preseason to three games to generate additional revenue for America’s most popular sport. Team owners on Tuesday approved the 17th game as expected, marking the first time in 43 years the regular season has been increased. It went from 14 to 16 games in 1978. The Super Bowl now will move back a week to Feb. 13, which places it directly in the middle of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Coincidentally, NBC has the broadcast rights to both. Each extra NFL game will be an interconference matchup based on where teams finished in the previous season. AFC teams will be hosting the 17th game in 2021.  Commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL also is looking into having “full stadiums in the upcoming season.”  Beyond next season, the league plans for some of the extra games to be played at international sites, with regular hosts London and Mexico City possibly joined by other venues. This year, the AFC East will host the NFC East in Week 17, with Washington at Buffalo, the New York Giants at Miami, Dallas at New England and Philadelphia at the New York Jets. The NFC West teams will visit AFC North clubs, with Seattle at Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles Rams at Baltimore, Arizona at Cleveland and San Francisco at Cincinnati.  NFC South members go to the AFC South, so New Orleans will be at Tennessee, Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay at Indianapolis, Carolina at Houston and Atlanta at Jacksonville. For NFC North clubs, Green Bay goes to Kansas City for a juicy matchup of Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, while Chicago is at Las Vegas, Minnesota at the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit at Denver. The full schedule will be released in May, but the Buccaneers will kick off the season on Thursday, Sept. 9. The regular season will end Jan. 9. s for fans in the stands — 119 games, including the postseason, had some in-person attendance during the coronavirus-impacted 2020 season, with approximately 1.2 millions fans in total — Goodell sounded optimistic.  The Super Bowl will be played in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium.  Last season, the league added two playoff teams to increase the number of postseason games. Now, it is adding 16 more matches, or “inventory,” as league executives often refer to it.

On the same day as National Football League clubs voted to have a 17 regular-season games starting in 2021, the Packers say they will update invoices for season ticket holders accordingly.  According to team officials, both Green and Gold package season ticket holders will receive their regular allotment of games this year since the Packers won’t be hosting an additional game this season. However, although Green package invoices aren’t affected by the schedule, officials say invoices will be updated accordingly for Gold package ticket holders in their online accounts to reflect that no additional game will happen at Lambeau Field this year. Officials say Gold package season ticket holders who’ve already paid their invoices for the season will receive a refund of the difference between the cost of the regular-season and preseason game. Anyone who hasn’t paid their invoice will pay the updated invoice listed on their online account. Meanwhile, any Gold package season ticket holder who received an invoice in the mail and was planning to mail their payment can now pay the adjusted amount due.  The team will be releasing the officials 2021 schedule later this spring.   play internationally. Starting in 2022, team officials say the Packers will be included in a regular rotation to play internationally. The Packers won’t be required to give up one of the traditional eight regular season home games hosted at Lambeau Field, however the Packers will play at an international site during years when the NFC hosts nine home games. According to the team, this would happen once every eight years, where the Packers will play eight regular-season home games and one preseason game at Lambeau Field, and one regular-season game at an international site.   Team officials say the Packers may play additional international games as the visiting team, and not the home team. According to the Packers, the league’s focus to play internationally will be in cities located in Canada, Europe, Mexico and South America.

Veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis is staying with the Green Bay Packers. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced Tuesday the team has re-signed both Lewis and defensive end Tyler Lancaster.  The 36-year-old Lewis has spent the last three seasons in Green Bay after playing 12 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him out of UCLA in the first round of the 2006 draft. He reached the Pro Bowl with Jacksonville in 2010 and is one of only seven tight ends in NFL history to play in at least 200 regular-season games and catch at least 400 passes. Lewis caught 10 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns while starting 15 games last season and operating primarily as the Packers’ blocking tight end. He started both playoff games and had three catches for 28 yards. He was on the field for just over 40% of the Packers’ snaps on offense.  Lancaster, 26, has made 18 starts over the last three seasons since signing with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern in 2018. He played 15 games with three starts last season and was on the field for just over 34% of the Packers’ defensive plays.
