Sports for March 29th

The National Football League is expected to move forward with plans for teams to play 17 games in a season, according to ESPN Senior Insider Adam Schefter. The schedule expansion is expected to be put into effect this week. According to Shefter, the league has been playing a 16 game (17 week) schedule since 1978, which is the longest stretch without a change in the league’s history.  NFL analyst Warren Sharp reports that the Green Bay Packers’ 17th game would be against the Kansas City Chiefs.

NASCAR announced Sunday that the NASCAR Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series at Bristol Motor Speedway have been pushed back to Monday.  The move is due to flooding and safety concerns. The Cup Series race was originally set to be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. NASCAR says the green flag will wave at 3 p.m. central.

In Cactus League baseball action Sunday, the Brewers beat the Reds 7-1. Avisail Garcia got the Brewers going with a three-run homer in the first inning,  his fourth of the spring. Starter Corbin Burnes went five innings, giving up one run on  three hits, to improve his spring record to 3-0.

With Spring Training winding down, the Brewers’ Opening Day roster was taking shape Sunday as the team packed up camp in Arizona.

Among the developments:

• Daniel Vogelbach has been informed that he’s made the team as a power pinch-hitter and occasional first baseman.

• Outfielders Jackie Bradley Jr. (wrist) and Lorenzo Cain (quad) look like a go for Opening Day after an encouraging final weekend of the exhibition slate.

• Reliever Justin Topa is out after suffering an elbow injury on his third pitch during a scrimmage Saturday. He underwent an MRI scan, and while the results were pending as of Sunday morning, the Brewers know that Topa will open the regular season on the injured list.

• Veteran reliever Brad Boxberger, released from a Minor League contract Friday, is back in the mix after inking a new Minor League deal with Milwaukee.

In one of the NCAA tournament’s most exciting games so far, the 11-seed UCLA Bruins upset the No. 2 seed Alabama Crimson Tide 88-78 in overtime in Sunday’s Sweet 16.  In other games, number one seed Gonzaga beat Creighton 83-65, Michigan downed Florida State 76-58 and last night USC downed Oregon 82-68.  In quarter final action Tuesday, Gonzaga plays USC.

In women’s Sweet 16 action from Sunday, South Carolina beat Georgia Tech 73-65, Stanford downed Missouri State 89-62, Louisville defeated Oregon 60-42 and Texas beat Maryland 64-61.

No. 1 seed UConn and No. 2 seed Baylor will duke it out in the River Walk Region final of the NCAA Tournament on Monday at 7 p.m. Winners of the 2019 national title, Baylor is out to keep its hopes alive of repeating as champion, while UConn must advance to its 13th straight Final Four if it wants to take home the program’s 12th national title.

In the NBA tonight the Bucks play the Clippers on the road. Milwaukee is 29-16 in the East Conference, a game-and-a-half behind the Nets and two-and-a-half games in back of first-place Philadelphia.  The Clippers are 31-16, a game behind the second-place Suns and and four games behind the first-place Utah Jazz.

University of Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez is expected to announce his retirement within the next couple of weeks, according to a report from Jeff Potrykus with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  Alvarez, who is 74, could stay on as the schools AD through July, according to Potrykus. Alvarez has been the University of Wisconsin AD since 2006 and was also the football coach from 1990-2005. During his time as head coach of the Badgers football program, Alvarez had a career record of 118-73-4 and is the winningest coach in Badger football history. Under Alvarez, Wisconsin won three Rose Bowls and Big Ten Championships in 1993, 1998 and 1999. Alvarez was a two time recipient of the Big Ten Coach of the Year Award in 1993 and 1998. In 2010, Alvarez was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Running back Aaron Jones has re-signed with the Green Bay Packers. Jones signed the paperwork Friday morning, according to General Manager Brian Gutekunst. The  four-year, $48 million contract,  includes a $13 million signing bonus. Jones likely could have made more money in free agency, but wanted to stay in Green Bay.  Jones made his first Pro Bowl in 2020 after rushing for a career-high 1,104 yards on 5.5 yards per carry. It was his second straight 1,000-yard rushing season. In four seasons, Jones is tied for fourth in franchise history with 37 rushing touchdowns, and is 11th with 3,364 rushing yards.   Jones is one of only two players in NFL history to have 3,000-plus rushing yards and 35-plus rushing touchdowns with an average of 5.00-plus yards per carry in their first four seasons. The only other player to do that? NFL legend Jim Brown.
