Keston Hiura hammered a three-run homer in the first inning, one of four Milwaukee home runs as the Brewers won their spring training opener over the White Sox Sunday 7-3. Hiura’s blast came with two on and no outs in the top of the first inning off Mike Wright who lasted one inning and took the loss. Milwaukee also got solo homers from Tyrone Taylor and Avisail Garcia in the fourth and a two-run shot from Dylan Cozens in the sixth as four of the Brewers hits were long balls. The Brewers managed just seven hits in the game but made them count. Lefthander Eric Lauer started and pitched one inning and got the win, giving up two runs on a homer by Adam Engel. The Brewers play the Angels Monday (today) with the first pitch coming at 2:05 and it can be heard on AM1600/93.1FM, WRPN.
Kofi Cockburn scored 19 points and No. 5 Illinois held off Wisconsin to win 74-69 and complete its first regular-season sweep in this series since 2005. After Wisconsin trailed by 13 points with less than three minutes left, D’Mitrik Trice nearly brought the Badgers all the way back by scoring 19 points in the final 2 minutes, 12 seconds. Trice’s 3-pointer cut Illinois’ lead to 70-69 with 6.7 seconds left. Trice finished with 29 points and had all of Wisconsin’s final 19 points.
Andre Curbelo scored 17 points and Da’Monte Williams had 12 for Illinois, which won despite a season-high 20 turnovers. Micah Potter had 15 points for Wisconsin (16-9, 10-8 Big Ten).
Illinois (18-6, 15-4) was playing without All-American candidate Ayo Dosunmu, who missed a second straight game after breaking his nose Tuesday in an 81-72 loss at Michigan State. Dosunmu recorded a triple-double Feb. 6 in a 75-60 victory over Wisconsin and had another two weeks later in a 94-63 blowout of Minnesota.
Wisconsin took 17 more shots than Illinois in the first half but still trailed 37-26 at the break because the Illini were so much more efficient. Illinois shot 65% and went 4 of 6 from 3-point range in the first half, while Wisconsin shot 27% and was 3 of 14 from beyond the arc.
Illinois cooled off considerably in the second half, but Wisconsin couldn’t heat up until Trice’s surge in the final minutes. Illinois led by 14 in the second half before Trice got Wisconsin back into the game.
This marked the home finale for Wisconsin and created an unusual atmosphere. The Badgers tried to honor their seven while observing pandemic protocols. As each senior was introduced and received a framed jersey in a pregame ceremony, parents cheered from several rows up the stands in an otherwise empty Kohl Center.
Even after winning its last two games, Illinois still may drop a couple spots because of its loss to Michigan State. Wisconsin is in danger of falling out of the Top 25 for the first time this season.
Illinois plays at No. 3 Michigan on Tuesday and Wisconsin is on the road Tuesday at Purdue.
The Milwaukee Bucks won their fifth straight Sunday with a 105-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers at home. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with 36 points and Khris Middleton added 19. Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers with 25. With the win, the Bucks inch closer to first place Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind Brooklyn and a game behind the 76ers. Milwaukee (21-13) hosts Denver on Tuesday night.

Girls Stat Basketball Finals
It all came down to Saturday night for the Notre Dame girls basketball team. The Tritons had dominated just about everybody this season and won 27 of 28 games, so settling for a silver ball in Saturday’s Division 2 state title game would not be satisfying.
So in the final 11 minutes the Tritons made their move. Tied 50-all, Notre Dame outscored the Beavers 18-6 the rest of the way and captured the state title with a 68-56 win at the La Crosse Center.
The win ended a long day as the No. 1-seeded Tritons (28-1) opened Saturday with a 9:05 a.m. semifinal game victory over No. 4 Onalaska.
The son of a former Green Bay Packer says he is heartbroken after losing his father’s Super Bowl II ring, and he is offering a $5,000 reward for its return. Mike Kostelnik says he believes he lost the ring that belonged to his dad, former Packers defensive tackle Ron Kostelnik, last weekend when he and his family went to visit a daughter at Indiana University and to tour Miami University in Ohio. He says he only stopped at a BP gas station in Greensburg, Indiana, and that he thought the ring was in the car’s console. Ron Kostelnik played for the Packers for eight seasons from 1961 to 1968 and helped the team win five NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls.
