Gonzaga received 60 first-place votes from a media panel in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released on Monday, picking up one vote from last week. The second-ranked Bears received the other four first-place votes in a week of little change. Gonzaga and Baylor have been 1-2 all season.  Michigan, Ohio State and Illinois rounded out the top five for the second straight week. The Buckeyes held their ground despite losing 92-87 to the Wolverines on Saturday. Alabama moved up two spots to No. 6 this week, its highest ranking since reaching No. 4 in 2006-07. The Crimson Tide have won three in a row since losing by three to No. 24 Missouri. Alabama is within reach of its first Southeastern Conference regular-season title in 19 years after rallying to beat Vanderbilt 82-78 on Saturday. The Crimson Tide are 13-1 in SEC play, 3 1/2 games ahead of No. 20 Arkansas and LSU. Alabama plays at Arkansas on Wednesday. No. 9 Iowa and No. 10 West Virginia returned to the top 10 this week.  The Wisconsin Badgers fell two spots to No. 23. Wisconsin (16-8) plays at number five Illinois (16-5) on Saturday.

The Midwest Conference says it will be resuming competition for spring sports. Spring sports competition will be returning for baseball, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s track and field. The conference has not had official competition since 2020 after it announced they would not sponsor league competition for the 2020-21 fall and winter seasons. St. Norbert College, Lawrence University and Ripon College are among the 10 conference members.  Midwest Conference schools will be able to play non-conference games as long as they follow the league’s COVID-19 protocols.  Games against non-conference opponents must also finish 15 days prior to the start of interconference play in each sport.  Competition in most spring sports will start between late March and mid-April, then conclude by mid-May. The Midwest Conference says schedules will be posted online in the coming weeks, which are subject to change.

After an off-day the Bucks return to action tonight hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves. Milwaukee beat the Sacramento Kings Sunday night 128-115 as Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 38 points and Khris Middleton added 32 as the Bucks won their second straight. Milwaukee is 18-13, a game-and-half- behind second-place Brooklyn and two games behind Eastern Conference leading Philadelphia.  Minnesota is 7-24 and last in the Western Conference.  The T-Wolves announced the firing of coach Ryan Saunders following Sunday’s loss to the Knicks in New York.  Former Toronto Raptors assistant Chris Finch was announced as the new coach during a Monday introductory news conference.

Shailene Woodley confirmed that she’s engaged to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The actor discussed her relationship with Rodgers on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday, saying they got engaged “a while ago.” The 37-year-old Rodgers mentioned his engagement and thanked his fiancee while accepting his third career MVP award on Feb. 6 but didn’t say her name.  The 29-year-old Woodley said she still hasn’t attended one of Rodgers’ games, noting the attendance restrictions caused by the pandemic this past season. Woodley added that she’d never even seen a football game before meeting Rodgers.

Meanwhile Rodgers, after revealing that he will step in as a guest host on the popular trivia Jeopardy game show last month, will get a 10-episode stint starting on April 5th. This according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
