States Top Sturgeon Biologist Charged With Misdemeanor
On the eve of another Wisconsin Sturgeon Spearing season the DNR’s top sturgeon biologist has been charged with a misdemeanor in Calumet County for allegedly obstructing a warden investigating the illegal sale of lake sturgeon eggs for caviar. The complaint alleges that on January 27th of last year Ryan Koenigs made several statements to wardens which were not truthful, during the investigation. A DNR investigative warden and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent were investigating complaints that Lake Sturgeon roe, also known as caviar, were being “illegally purchased, sold, bartered and traded around the Lake Winnebago area.” Koenigs allegedly lied about knowing a known egg processor. One processor told investigators he got most of his sturgeon eggs for caviar from Koenigs. The obstruction of a conservation warden charge was filed in Calumet County court on Wednesday. Koenigs initial court appearance is scheduled for March 29th.
Grandparents Scam Back
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that the “Grandparents Scam” is back. They took a recent report about the scam in which victims were called by an “attorney” and informed their grandchild has been involved in an accident and needs bail money. The caller provides a given dollar amount to withdraw from the bank and is told not to let the bank know why the money is being withdrawn. The attorney then advises that a “courier” will come to their residence to pick up the money. The scam has been circulating in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.

Millions In Interest Savings In OASD Referendum
The Oshkosh Area School District recently secured $17 million in interest savings as a result of its borrowing schedule for the $107 million referendum project, approved by voters last November. The savings will allow the District to offer a lower mill rate than projected. On January 27th the district was able to lock in $65 million of its upcoming referendum debt for a better than expected 1.66 percent interest rate which will save $17 million. When the referendum costs were estimated last year, a rate of 3.5 percent was anticipated. The lower mill rate means that for a $100,000 home value, first-year savings will be $12 or a total of $36 in tax impact that year. Second-year savings will be $16 and from years three through twenty, annual savings will be $15.
Off Duty FDL County Sheriffs Deputy Praised For Actions During Fox River Mall Shooting
A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy is being credited with helping to save the life a victim of the Fox River Mall shooting on January 31st. Blaine Evans was off-duty and was with family helping to celebrate the birthday of a relative at the mall when the shooting occurred. Evans identified himself as an off-duty deputy to a store manager who took him to a video surveillance room to look at video in an effort to identify the shooter. They saw a victim of the shooting laying on a sidewalk near the main entrance. Evans went to the victim who had been shot in the hip. He helped stop the bleeding and got information about the shooter he relayed to law enforcement when they arrived. Evans later told Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt, “We train for this. Any one of us in the same situation would have done the same thing. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time tonight.”

Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll presented a challenge coin to a school bus driver during the County Board meeting this week. Daniel Berndt was driving the school bus toward Ripon last November 11th on State Highway 23 near Sunnyside Road when he stopped in front of a residence to let some children off. Berndt spotted a vehicle that did not appear to be slowing down or stopping for the bus. One child had already exited the bus and ran toward the house, but two others were about to get off. Berndt closed the door to keep them from harm. The vehicle didn’t stop and passed the bus on the right side. The driver tried to stop the vehicle but slid on the gravel past the bus door. The driver was stopped in Ripon and issued a citation. Sheriff Podoll says Berndt was a hero that day and awarded him the challenge coin as a symbol of gratitude and recognition.
Sturgeon Spearing Reminders

Sturgeon spearers are reminded that for the season that starts tomorrow the DNR is implementing a contactless registration process at registration stations. To ensure the safety for the public and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, all DNR registration stations are now drive-thru only and have been relocated to boat landings, city parks and government building parking lots for the 2021 season. To help with the new registration process, the DNR is asking spearers to place harvested sturgeon on tailgates or in an easily accessible location and remain in their vehicles throughout the registration process. The 2021 season will also be the first year where spear size and tine arrangement will be restricted. A new regulation limits the maximum spearhead width to 18 inches, and tines can only be arranged in a single plane. Water clarity conditions are expected to be conducive to a more successful season for spearers this year.
