9 February 2021 Sports

Sports for February 9th

The Packers officially have a pair of leaders for defense and special teams, as Head Coach Matt LaFleur announced the hiring of Joe Barry and promotion of Maurice Drayton.

For Barry, it’s the third time serving as a coordinator, having previously been in the role for Detroit (2007-2008) and Washington (2015-2016). During those seasons as defensive coordinator, his defenses ranked as the worst in the NFL.  Most recently, Barry was the Rams’ assistant head coach and linebackers coach from 2017-2020.  Barry and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur were on the same coaching staff with the Rams in 2017 under head coach Sean McVay.   Drayton was the Packers’ assistant special teams coach for the past three seasons, predating LaFleur’s arrival as head coach by a year. He was previously the assistant special teams coach for the Colts from 2016-2017. Barry replaces Mike Pettine and Drayton replaces Shawn Mennenga.

Kansas dropped out of The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll for the first time in 12 years on Monday, ending the Jayhawks’ record streak of 231 consecutive weeks ranked in the Top 25.  Gonzaga and Baylor held down the top two spots, just as they have all season, with the Bulldogs getting 55 of 63 first-place votes and the Bears getting the other eight. Michigan took advantage of Villanova’s loss at St. John’s to jump into the top three, rival Ohio State climbed three spots to No. 4 and the Wildcats rounded out the top 5.

Illinois gave the Big Ten three teams in the top six after beating Indiana in overtime and pounding No. 21 Wisconsin over the weekend. The Illini were followed by Texas Tech, Houston, Virginia and Missouri, which beat Kentucky and No. 11 Alabama to reach the top 10 for the first time since Dec. 24, 2012. Wisconsin fell to 21st.

In the NBA Monday, the Milwaukee Bucks won at Denver over the Nuggets 125-112 for their fifth straight win. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 30 points and Khris Middleton scored 29. Nikola Jokich led the Nuggets with 35.  The Bucks, now 16-8, are just a game behind Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference.  Milwaukee plays at Phoenix on Wednesday.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran 86, Ripon 77-Riley Brooks led the Tigers with 25 points and a double/double. Grant Schneider had 22 points, Kai Agamaite 15 and Spencer Schultz scored 10 points.
