Officer In Blake Shooting Will Not Be Prosecuted
A relatively peaceful protest in Kenosha last night followed on the heels of the announcement yesterday that Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley would not be prosecuting the police officer that shot Jacob Blake in the back on August 23rd of last year. National Guard troops moved into the city to quell any violence that might occur. Governor Tony Evers criticized the decision not to prosecute Officer Rusten Sheskey saying it was evidence that our work is not done in doing something about racism. State Attorney General Josh Kaul said regardless of the decision there is still a pressing need for reform of our criminal justice system.
Waupaca County Murder Suspect Pleads Not Guilty
The 44-year-old Waupaca man suspected of shooting and killing an 18-year-old Waupaca man pleaded not guilty to a first degree intentional homicide charge when he was arraigned in Waupaca County court Tuesday. William Zelenski is suspected of killing Ryleee Manente-Powell last October. The teen’s mother 35-year-old Tiffany Powell is charged with being party to her son’s death. She returns to court March 15th for a status hearing. According to the criminal complaint Zelenski suspected the victim and another teen of burglarizing his home and of stealing his exotic pets. Zelenski had befriended the boy’s mother and the two confronted the victim about the theft on Van Street. Zelenski was armed with a shotgun. After the shooting Zelenski called 9-1-1 and claimed the teen had attacked him.
Washington County Hit And Run Arrest
Washington County Sheriff’s officials say social media posts about the hit-and-run of a pedestrian on December 4th on County Highway Z in the Town of Polk led to tips and a suspect. The investigation led to a 39-year-old man and his 2003 Toyota Camry in the City of Oshkosh. The suspect admitted to being in the area of the crash and said he thought he had hit a traffic cone. He had in fact hit a traffic cone, construction trailer and the pedestrian. The suspect had replaced a missing mirror on his vehicle. Charges are being sought against him for hit and run causing injury.
Dodge County Ice Safety Reminder
Dodge County Sheriff’s officials are warning residents the ice on area waters isn’t safe for Winter recreational activities after deputies responded to two recent reports of people falling through the ice. Temperatures have been below freezing, but are expected to get into the 30’s so ice may not be sustainable for activities like ice fishing or riding on ATVs or snowmobiles. There may be open water in some areas. Deputies advise wearing a life jacket, carrying ice safety picks and informing a friend or family member of your location if you’re going out on the ice. You should also check local ice reports before going out.
Ripon Common Council Meeting
Ripon’s Common Council will meet in closed session tonight to select finalists for the City Administrator’s job. Current City Administrator Lori Rich will be retiring in April. The City is hoping to have a new City Administrator on board by March. The Council will also review minutes from a closed session held on December 8th for accuracy. The meeting is at 7 pm in the Council Chambers of the Ripon City Hall.
Abrahamson Tribute
U.S. and State of Wisconsin flags were flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of former Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson who passed away on December 19th at the age of 87. In issuing the executive order Governor Tony Evers said Abrahamson was the first woman to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the first to serve as Chief Justice, but he also said she paved and lighted the way for other women who would come after her. Private Memorial Services were held for Abrahamson Tuesday.
Alice In Dairyland Finals Cancelled

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection Monday announced the cancellation of the 74th Annual Alice in Dairyland finals. Those finals were supposed to be held in Walworth County in May. The 75th finals will be held May 19th through the 21st, 2022 in Dane County as previously planned. DATCP Secretary-designee Randy Romanski says while 2020 is behind us the pandemic is not. He says cancelling the 74th Alice in Dairyland finals is an unfortunate, but necessary step. Julia Nunes of Chippewa Falls , the 73rd Alice in Dairyland will continue in her current role until July 15th, 2022 becoming the official 74th Alice this May.
Youth Apprenticeship Program
Envision Greater Fond du Lac will be hosting four virtual presentations this month on Everything You Need to Know About Youth Apprenticeship. The presentations will be on January 12th at 6 pm, January 13th at 7 pm, January 14th at 6:30 pm, and January 20th at 5:30 pm. The Youth Apprenticeship Program is a part of a statewide initiative and is designed for high school students who want hands-on learning in an area of career interest at a work site, along with classroom instruction.
