Neenah Man Sentenced In Fatal Boating Accident

A Winnebago County judge recently sentenced a 46-year-old Neenah man to three years in prison and three years of extended supervision on charges stemming from a boating accident on Lake Winnebago that killed two sisters. On August 18th of 2018 Brian Sullivan was driving one of two boats that collided. The collision killed 26-year-old Lauren Laabs and her 20-year-old sister Cassie Laabs. The two women were thrown from their boat during the collision and drowned. They were not wearing life jackets. Their father Kim was driving their boat. Sullivan’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit. Sullivan was sentenced by Judge Scott Woldt last Wednesday.

New Strain Of COVID Worrisome

Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says it was concerning at first to hear there is a new strain of the coronavirus hitting our shores that spreads faster. He says the silver lining is it will be treatable with the new COVID-19 vaccines. “It does not look to be any deadlier or any more hospitalizations because of it, just more people are getting it. So the good news is it is not twice as deadly or it is not twice as likely to put you in the hospital, but it is 50 percent more likely you’re going to get it.” The first person to get it in the U.S. was a 20-something-year-old man in Colorado south of Denver. He was put in isolation, but the worry was he didn’t get it by traveling, but somebody infected him.

State Representative Dallman Gets Committee Assignments

State Representative Alex Dallman recently released information on his Assembly committee assignments for the new legislative session. He will serve as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Colleges and Universities. He also is a member of the Science, Technology and Broadband; Tourism, Sporting Heritage and Regulatory Licensing Reform committees. In November Dallman was elected to represent the 41st State Assembly District succeeding Joan Ballweg who was elected Senator for the 14th State Senate District.

Buechel Running For Eighth Term As FDL County Executive

Fond du Lac County Executive Allen Buechel will run for an eighth term this spring. With 28 years as County Executive and 17 years before that on the County Board he has 45 years of experience in county government. He says it’s an honor to serve as County Executive. “I enjoy what I do it is such an honor to serve the people of Fond du Lac County and to try make life better for everyone whether its businesses, the residents we want to be a nice place for people to live, work and to visit.” He says there’s still more that he wants to do. Buechel has the record for being the longest serving County Executive in the State’s history.

Michels Returns To SRO Position

Ripon Police Officer Lindsey Michels returns to the roll of School Resource Officer this week She will also take on the role of Community Liaison Officer. Police Chief Bill Wallner says Michels did a wonderful job in the SRO position in the past. “You know it is a very important position for us in terms of building relationships with you people in our community and she has done a fabulous job of that in the past and continues to be a resource.” He says Officer Michels is someone kids can go to with questions or be a resource if their something going on their homes. In addition she can be a resource for the school district and their staff.  Michels had previously served as the School Resource Officer from 2015 to 2017. In the role as Community Liaison Officer she will handle organizing some of the department’s community relations events like National Night Out. She will also handle some of the code enforcement.
