Successful Gun Deer Season For Hunters

The Wisconsin DNR says the deer harvest for the 2020 9-day gun deer hunt was up nearly 16 percent over 2019. The buck harvest was up by 12.2 percent and the antlerless total by 19 percent. A total of 188,712 deer were taken during the season, which included 85,340 bucks and 103,372 antlerless deer. All management zones showed harvest increases from 2019, but harvest trends lagged behind 2018 which had the highest total deer harvest since 2013. As of Sunday a total of 820,299 licenses were sold for all deer seasons including 569,203 for the 9-day gun deer hunt.
Deer hunters in area counties had good success during the 9-day gun deer season with 2,292 deer taken in Fond du Lac County including 1,048 bucks. Waupaca County saw 5,595 deer harvested and of that 2,353 bucks. In Waushara County 3,709 deer were taken and of that 1,627 bucks. Hunters in Winnebago County took home 1,031 deer including 500 bucks. In Green Lake County the total deer harvested was 2,468 with 1,020 bucks. The total harvest in Marquette County was 3,878 deer with 1,533 bucks. In Dodge County 2,749 deer were harvested including 1,223 bucks.

Hunting Accidents
The Department of Natural Resources has released more details about a hunting accident in Waushara County Thanksgiving Day. Officials say about 4:40 last Thursday afternoon a 26-year-old woman was walking on the Ice Age Trail when she was struck by a bullet in the thigh. A 51-year-old man was shooting at what he though was a deer. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. There were nine firearm-involved injuries including one fatality during the gun deer season. The fatality occurred in Door County where a 65-year-old man tripped as he was exiting his blind. The shotgun he was carrying went off striking him in the chest. He died at the scene.
