Hunter Injured In Waushara County Shooting

The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office says a hunter was shot Thursday afternoon near the intersection of Czech Avenue and 7th Court in the Town of Coloma. The victim received non-life threatening wounds. Both the victim and the shooter were not from the area. A 911 caller reported the incident at 4:41 last Thursday afternoon. The Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin DNR are investigating circumstances surround the shooting.

Dodge County Man Sentenced On Arson Charge

A 42-year-old Lowell man was sentenced in Dodge County court Monday to 4 years in prison and 15 years of extended supervision for setting fire to his home after a breakup. The incident happened on April 12th of 2017 on Hillsdale Road in the Town of Herman. When officers arrived Benjamin Mueller’s hands were covered in soot, he was drunk and rolling around on the ground dressed in a women’s brand of pajama pants. He had used gasoline to set two fires in the residence where he lived. Other residents of the home were displaced for an extended period of time.

Waupun House Fire

No one was injured during a house fire in Waupun early last Saturday morning. The fire was at a duplex at 540 East Jefferson Street and was reported by a person that was visiting a downstairs tenant.  Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says everyone safely evacuated the duplex and flames were shooting out of second story windows when firefighters arrived. The home is owned by Ben Harper. There was significant smoke and fire damage to the second floor as well as water damage to the first floor and basement. Six people were displaced by the fire. The cause is being investigated, but the blaze is not considered suspicious.

Dumpster Fire At Milk Specialties Plant In FDL

No one was injured during a fire at the Milk Specialties plant in Fond du Lac Monday afternoon. Firefighters responded to 325 Tompkins Street for what was reported as a dumpster fire. When they arrived they learned the dumpster was located inside the loading dock pulled it outside and extinguished the fire. The building was evacuated for a short time due to smoke conditions. The cause of the fire is being investigated. The time of the fire call was 1:14 pm.

Chimney Fire Reported In Ripon

The Ripon Area Fire District responded to a chimney fire on Watson Street last Saturday night. Residents of the home at 812 Watson Street were evacuated while firefighters investigated to make sure the fire hadn’t spread to the attic area. Fire Department officials reported no damage to the interior of the home or the chimney. They were on the scene for about an hour. Fire Departments from Brandon-Fairwater, Markesan and Princeton provided mutual aid. The time of the fire call was just after 8:30 pm.

Increase In Unemployment Rates In October

State officials say unemployment rates in Wisconsin increased in all but eight of its 72 counties last month. For area counties that increase ranged from three-tenths to six-tenths of a percent. According to Federal Labor statistics Fond du Lac County’s jobless rate grew to 3.7 percent for October, Dodge County’s rate was 3.8 percent, Winnebago County’s rate was 4 percent, Waupaca County’s rate stood at 4.3 percent, Waushara County at 4.4 percent, Green Lake County 4.5 percent, and Marquette County’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent.  The cities of Fond du Lac and Oshkosh both saw an increase as well; both had jobless rates of 4.1 percent for October.

New Resource For Waupun Senior Citizens

Waupun has a new online resource for senior citizens. The Waupun Community Coalition on Aging says the hub is designed to better connect the city’s older adults and their families to resources, programming and activities. Officials say it is a one-stop shop for questions about transportation, caregiving, nutrition, volunteering, educational opportunities, senior living options and more. The new online resource is available on the City of Waupun website.
