The Ripon Police Department recently made a switch in its school resource officer position. Brett Henning who has been in that role for the past 3 ½ years is taking another role in the department. Meanwhile Sergeant Lindsey Michels, who served as SRO from 2015 to 2017, has returned to that position until a permanent replacement for the program can be found. The department is reevaluating the position and considering making it year round instead or transitioning the officer to patrol during the summer months.

Trial Scheduled For Woman Suspected In Child’s Death

A jury trial has been scheduled next June in Dodge County court for the 33-year-old Lomira woman charged in connection with her three-year-old child’s death. The five-day trial for Jamie Hildebrandt will begin June 7th. She is charged with neglecting a child with a consequence of death. During the investigation into the child’s death last March she allegedly admitted to stepping on her son after laying him on the bathroom floor to reach for more diapers, forgetting he was there. An autopsy concluded the toddler died of multiple blunt force injuries to his head, chest and back. Hildebrandt told investigators she didn’t call 911 because she thought he was okay. She remains in the Dodge County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.

Heidel House Reopening Good News

The executive director of the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce says plans to revitalize and reopen the historic Heidel House Resort property in Green Lake is good news for the area. Jason Mansmith says it will benefit Green Lake and adjacent communities including Ripon. “It’s a great thing for Green Lake and we love to partner with Green Lake and work with Green Lake on things. It now only benefits Green Lake, but it benefits us as well along with Berlin and Princeton and Markesan and those communities around there.” He says the location of all five communities makes them easily accessible to people and makes promoting them a pleasure. Developers hope to reopen the Heidel House property next May with a more modern hotel, resort and conference center.

Radon Testing Kit Deal Offered

The Fond du Lac County Health Department is reminding residents they should test their homes, offices, and schools for radon every two years. To encourage testing, the department is offering a free short-term radon test kit in exchange for a non-perishable, non-expired food item to be donated to a local food pantry this month and next month. The test kits are easy to use and testing instructions are included in the kit. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that occurs naturally in Wisconsin soil and can enter homes primarily through cracks and openings in basement or foundation floors and walls. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind smoking. Kits are available at the department’s office in Fond du Lac.
