The NFL played a doubleheader on Monday. In the first game the Kansas City Chiefs bounced back from a loss at home against the Raiders to win in the rain at Buffalo 26-17. The Chiefs used a balanced attack the Bills. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 21 of 26 passes for two touchdowns, both to tight end Travis Kelce and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire gained a season-high 161 yards. On the night Kansas City rushed for over 200 yards. Defensively the Chiefs held Bills quarterback Josh Allen in check as he completed just 14 of 27 passes for 122 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Buffalo managed just 84 yards on the ground on 23 carries. Overall Kansas City outgained Buffalo 466 yards to 206. The first-place Chiefs improve to 5-1 in the AFC West while Buffalo drops to 4-2, but still good enough for first in the AFC East.
In the second game the Arizona Cardinals pounded the Cowboys in Dallas 38-10. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, a Texas native, had an impressive night as he played in his first Monday Night Football game doing so at AT&T Stadium. After a scoreless first quarter Arizona got going, converting two Zeke Elliott fumbles in the second quarter into touchdowns. Murray was 9-24 for 184 yards, good for two touchdowns and finished with a 93.8 passer rating. Christian Kirk caught both TD passes, including an 80-yarder in the second quarter to put the Cardinals up 21-0. Arizona’s defense forced four turnovers and sacked Andy Dalton three times. Dalton took over after Dak Prescott was injured last week and lost for the season. Dallas came into the game with the number one total offense but the Cardinals dominated. Arizona (4-2) is tied with the Rams for second in the NFC West. Dallas drops to 2-4 but is still in first place in the NFC East.
The Packers are off today, a day after looking at film of their 38-10 drubbing at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday. Green Bay will start practice tomorrow getting ready for Sunday’s game at Houston. The Texans are just 1-5 but four of their losses to the Chiefs, Steelers, Ravens and Titans, who have a cumulative 19-2 record. Green Bay suffered its first loss of the season Sunday to drop 4-1.
The World Series gets underway tonight in Los Angeles as the Dodgers host the Tampa Bay Rays in their first-ever Fall Classic appearance. The Rays will send Tyler Glasnow (2-1) and a 4.66 ERA in the postseason against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (2-1). Kershaw is making his fifth overall World Series start and sixth overall appearance. He’s 1-2 in the Fall Classic with an ERA of 5.40 in 26 2/3 innings. In his Game 4 NLCS start against the Braves, Kershaw was tagged for four runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. First pitch is at 7:09 CDT.
Giannis Antetokounmpo will be eligible to sign a supermax contract extension this summer.
Even if he doesn’t sign that deal and instead chooses to become a free agent next year, Tim Bontemps of ESPN reported Monday that the Milwaukee Bucks have no plans to trade the two-time MVP:
“Multiple sources have emphatically said Milwaukee will not look to trade Antetokounmpo if he passes on the extension. Instead, the Bucks will try to improve their roster and use the next year to show Antetokounmpo why he should stay.
The Wisconsin DNR is reminding interested spearers they have until Oct. 31 to purchase a license for the 2021 Lake Winnebago sturgeon spearing season. The spearing season will open on Feb. 13, 2021 for Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes of Butte des Morts, Winneconne and Poygan, running for a maximum of 16 days or until any of the pre-determined harvest caps are reached.
Both resident and nonresident licenses can be purchased through the GoWild system or at any license sales location. All license holders must be a minimum of 12 years old. Licenses for the Lake Winnebago spear fishery must be purchased before Oct. 31, 2020, except for military personnel home on leave during the spearing season and youth turning 12 years old between Nov. 1, 2020 and the last day of the 2021 spearing season.
While there are unlimited licenses available for Lake Winnebago, the Upriver Lakes fishery is managed by a preference point system and limited to 500 permitted spearers. Applicants authorized for an Upriver Lakes tag have until the start of the spearing season to purchase a license and cannot purchase one for Lake Winnebago.
The sale of sturgeon spearing licenses funds a variety of sturgeon management activities on the Winnebago system, such as successfully restoring lake sturgeon to the upper Wolf River in partnership with the the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin.
