Second Competency Exam Ordered For FDL Murder Suspect
A second competency exam has been ordered for a 27-year-old Fond du Lac man suspected of intentionally hitting and killing a motorcyclist with his father’s pickup truck in July. Daniel Navarro is charged in the death of 55-year-old Phillip Thiessen of Fond du Lac who died at the scene of the crash on Winnebago Drive. According to the criminal complaint Navarro felt he was a victim of racism and was targeted because he was Mexican. Navarro in turn said he picked hitting a motorcycle because he believed the person driving the motorcycle was white and in Wisconsin white people drive motorcycles and the Harley climate is made up of white racists. The first competency hearing found Navarro incompetent to stand trial, but prosecutors were granted a second exam. Thiessen was a former Marine and police officer.

Close Before You Doze
Fresh off National Fire Prevention Week there is one last piece of advice. Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul says a couple years ago a campaign was launched to get people to shut their bedroom doors before they go to sleep at night. They even came up with a term “Close Before you Doze.” He says it may seem like simple advice, but over the years they’ve seen how fire in a home may destroy everything around it, but can leave a room with a closed door untouched. “We can have a fire and we shop pictures all the time that you open that door and that room hasn’t been touched, but yet the outside of the room the hallway and whatever is total destruction.”

Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Autism Awareness Program
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has started an Autism Awareness program. Sheriff Roger Brandner says they are the first to respond to an emergency and it is crucial for their deputies to have a working knowledge of autism, the patience required, and the tools necessary to resolve situations. He says they will be providing additional autism awareness to law enforcement during their annual training. To help get the message across one of their squad cars has been outfitted with an autism awareness design and their squads will soon be equipped with sensory go bags that will contain supplies that will be used to help calm and relax the anxiety on calls involving the autistic.
