Drew Brees led a go-ahead drive to start overtime on Monday night to help steal a game over the Los Angeles Chargers that they trailed by 20-3 at one point. Wil Lutz kicked a field goal to give the Saints a 30-27 lead on the first possession of overtime and that held up. The Chargers’ drive and the game ended when Mike Williams caught a fourth-down pass but was stopped just short of a first down by Marshon Lattimore and the Saints escaped with a win.  The win put a damper on a solid performance by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who threw three first half touchdowns for the Chargers who led 20-10 at the intermission.  The Saints tied the game late in the fourth quarter and the Chargers had a chance to win at the end of regulation but a 50-yard field goal attempt by Michael Bagley hit the right goal post as time expired to send the game into OT.

It was a slow start for Brees and the Saints as the Chargers defense stopped New Orleans’ rushing game and pressured the future Hall-of-Famer as he tried to get the passing game going. At one point the Chargers led by 17 points in the first half.   Brees and his teammates finally got some defense going in the second half and the offense came alive as well, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter to tie it.  On the night, Brees was 33 of 47 for 325 yards with one touchdown to Jared Cook and one interception.  Emmanuel Sanders snared 12 passes for 122 yards for New Orleans.  Alvin Kamara gained just 45 yards on the ground on 11 carries but caught eight passes for an additional 74 yards.

Herbert, who was making just his fourth NFL start threw four touchdowns becoming the first rookie to do that on a Monday night. He completed 20 of 34 for 264 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Mike Williams caught five passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns while Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry also caught touchdown throws.

The Saints improve to 3-2 while the Charges fall to 1-4.

He started his college career at Iowa Western Community College (2016) before transferring to the University of Iowa for two seasons (2017-18) and then played one year at Indiana State (2019). Last season, Dafney ranked No. 2 on the team with 439 yards rushing after carrying the ball during the final four games of the season out of the Wildcat package. For the season, he scored seven touchdowns (six rushing and one receiving)and was named second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference at fullback and to the MVFC All-Newcomer team. Dafney will wear No. 49 for the Packers.

The coronavirus pandemic didn’t stop the Green Bay Packers Foundation from awarding $1 million in annual grants for the second consecutive year.  The foundation announced this week they’ve distributed grants to 237 civic and charitable organizations throughout Wisconsin.  Due to the pandemic, recipients won’t receive the grants at a December luncheon as in the past. Instead, the grants were distributed earlier to assist organizations impacted by the pandemic, according to a news release.  This year’s grants were given to organizations that will direct the funds toward the areas of elderly, homelessness, human services and hunger. Of the 237 organizations chosen, 26 reside in Brown County, with those organizations receiving a combined $114,000.
