Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz is about to get his chance to show he’s worthy of all the acclaim that accompanied his arrival on campus last year. Mertz is likely to open the season as the 16th-ranked Badgers’ first-team quarterback now that foot surgery has sidelined returning starter Jack Coan indefinitely, Wisconsin opens the season Oct. 24 against Illinois. Mertz was rated as the nation’s No. 3 pro-style quarterback and No. 65 overall prospect in his high school class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports.

In Thursday Night Football the Bears held on for a 20-19 win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Soldier Field in Chicago.  Tampa Bay led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter but the Bears behind quarterback Nick Foles battled back and led at the half 14-13.  The Bucs took the lead early in the third quarter 16-14 before the Bears regained the lead late in the quarter 17-16.  Tampa Bay scored another field goal on its opening possession in the fourth quarter to lead 19-17 before Cairo Santos connected for the game winning field goal from 38 yards with 1:08  left in regulation.  The Bucs had one final possession but turned it over on downs and the Bears ran out the clock. Foles completed 30 of 42 passes for 242 yards, a touchdown to Jimmy Graham and one interception.  Brady was 25 of 41 for 253 yards and one touchdown to Mike Evans.  Ronald Jones II rushed for 106 yards on 17 carries while Ryan Succop kicked four field goals for Tampa Bay.  The Bucs drop to 3-2 while the Bears improve to 4-1.

In the NLDS the Braves blanked Miami 7-0 to take 3-0 lead in their series and the Dodgers pounded San Dieto 12-3 and also lead 3-0.  In the ALDS Houston beat Oakland 11-6 to lead 3-1 and the Yankees beat the Rays 5-1 to even their series at 2 games each.

The Lakers play the Heat tonight in game five of the NBA Finals.  Los Angeles leads 3-1 over Miami.
