Fatal Accident In FDL

A 62-year-old Fond du Lac man died of injuries he suffered when his moped collided with a car at the intersection of South Pioneer Road and Forest Avenue in Fond du Lac late Saturday morning. Police say an ambulance took Thomas Norton to the Fond du Lac County airport where a Theda Star helicopter flew him to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He died later that day. Norton was making a left-hand turn to head south with his moped onto South Pioneer Road when a northbound 1962 Studebaker struck him. The 74-year-old North Fond du Lac man driving the car wasn’t injured. The accident was dispatched at 10:25 Saturday morning.

A 32-year-old Baraboo man suspected of participating in burglaries in the Lake Delton area is facing charges for leading police and Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies on a high speed chase early Friday morning. The vehicle driven by Joseph Uptagraw managed to elude Lake Delton Police and despite running over stop spikes put down by a Portage Police officer continued to elude law enforcement. At one point a tire came off the rim of the vehicle and he continued driving at speeds over 100 miles an hour. He eventually pulled over and ran on foot into a wooded area. Portage Police and a K-9 were able to track him. Uptagraw was taken to the Columbia County Jail on felony eluding and possession of methamphetamine charges and is being held on a probation and parole warrant.

Another COVID Relief Bill Not Likely Before The Election

Congressman Glenn Grothman says it is unlikely the House will take up another COVID-19 relief bill until after the November election. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says part of the reason is the amount of money the federal government has already spent on coronavirus relief. “I think part of it is how much money we are going to spend we’ve already spent $3 trillion. I think some businesses need more help. I wouldn’t mind voting for a little bit more.” He says Democrats don’t want to give President Trump another victory before the election and the President doesn’t want to spend another $2 trillion.

Ripon Schools Coronavirus Decisions

The Ripon Area School Board will be involved in a decision once it becomes appropriate to move from a blend of in-person and virtual learning at the middle and high schools to an all in-person model. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says for now they are satisfied with their blended learning at the middle and high schools and in-person learning at the elementary schools. “The move to face-to-face at our middle school and high school is certainly something we would want the board involved in because we would be bringing people back together much less and I feel we have to be really confident and have people on board feeling comfortable with that decision before we would move to face-to-face.” Each month the school board is updated on the situation. She says a new dashboard on the district website will allow families to track where they are at with COVID-19 numbers in the district, community, county, and state.

Weatherization Assistance Available

ADVOCAP is funded by the Wisconsin Department of Housing, Energy and Community Relations  to provide weatherization services in eligible households in Fond du Lac, Green Lake, and Winnebago Counties. Jason VanderVelden is the Weatherization Director for ADVOCAP. He says they do have to verify income and eligibility but can provide free assistance to make homes energy efficient. “That’s why we’ve got this weatherization program that helps with energy efficiency improvements in homes. We’ve got an emergency furnace program that can solve some problems for people. So ADVOCAP is offering a lot of different things to help alleviate some those concerns as temperatures begin to drop” He says basically you are receiving a grant and it can be used to improve your heating system or replace appliances like water heaters, refrigerators and freezers with more energy efficient appliances. VanderVelden says typically people who have the weatherization done save about $500 a year on energy costs.  It starts with a professional evaluation of your home. To get things started call the ADVOCAP Office in Oshkosh at (920) 426-0150 or 1-866-HEAT-WIS.
