Brent Suter and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, Ryan Braun hit his 350th career homer and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 Wednesday night to split a doubleheader. The Cardinals took the opener 4-2 behind Adam Wainwright’s four-hitter.
In the nightcap, the Brewers scored four runs in the first inning on just one hit, the three-run homer by Braun. Suter allowed two hits over three scoreless innings, walking two and striking out three. Freddy Peralta (3-1) followed with two perfect innings, striking out three. Devin Williams struck out two in a perfect sixth, and Eric Yardley retired the side in the seventh. Jacob Nottingham’s third homer, a two-run shot in the sixth, put the Brewers up 6-0.
Johan Oviedo (0-3), activated off the injured list earlier in the day after passing a rapid test for COVID-19, allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings. He hit three batters with pitches.
In the opener, Wainwright (5-1) shook off an early home run, striking out nine in the seven-inning complete game. Christian Yelich hit a one-out single in the Milwaukee first and Keston Huira followed with his 13th home run. Wainwright quickly settled down and allowed just two singles and a walk the rest of the way.
Tyler O’Neill hit a solo homer in the second and Brad Miller’s seventh homer, a solo drive in the sixth, put the Cardinals up 4-2. Brandon Woodruff (2-4), who also went the distance, allowed three earned and seven hits. He struck out five and walked none.
After a day off today, RHP Adrian Houser (1-5, 5.40 ERA) opens the three-game series Friday at home against Kansas City. Houser, 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in his first two starts, is 0-5 with a 7.01 ERA over his last seven starts.

Offensive linemen Billy Turner and Lucas Patrick were back to work on Wednesday as the Packers began getting ready for the Lions Sunday at Lambeau Field. Both saw limited participation. Defensive stalwart Kenny Clark, with his groin injury, was not able to practice at all.
Meanwhile, former standout Darius slay is gone (traded to Philadelphia in the offseason). And Detroit’s top 3 current corners are injured. Justin Coleman was placed on Injured Reserve this week while Desmond Trufant did not practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury. And rookie Jeff Okudah is coming off a hamstring injury that kept him out of the opener (though Okudah did practice Wednesday).
On Sunday the Packers expect to see Lions running back Adrian Peterson. The 35-year-old back is coming off a 96-yard effort in the opener and is defying his age.
Offensively, Davante Adams is looking to back up his franchise-record-tying 14 catches in the opener. He is the prime target of Aaron Rodgers, who tossed four touchdown passes against the Vikings in the season-opener.
Meanwhile, the Packers added two players to the practice squad Wednesday and released one.
Green Bay signed T Ryan Pope and DL Billy Winn to the practice squad and released DL Daylon Mack.
Pope (6-7, 320), a first-year player out of San Diego State, was originally signed by the Lions as an undrafted rookie free agent in May 2019. He spent the 2019 training camp with the Lions and parts of the 2019 regular season on the practice squads of the 49ers and Jaguars. Pope stayed with the Jaguars through this year’s training camp and was released on Sept. 5.
Winn, a 6-4, 305-pound eighth-year player, was originally selected by the Browns in the sixth round (No. 205 overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Boise State. After spending the first three seasons of his career with the Browns, he played for the Colts in 2015 and for the Broncos in 2016-17 and 2019, but injuries sidelined Winn for the 2017-19 seasons.

Woodson and 13 other modern-era greats are among the first-year nominees, which also includes quarterback Peyton Manning, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson and one of the most prolific sack specialists of all time, Jared Allen and Packers wide receiver Donald Driver, who has been nominated before but has yet to make his way into Canton.

The Big Ten Conference will start its football season the weekend of Oct. 23-24. The Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to start the season after delaying it due to COVID-19. The Wisconsin Badgers are part of the Big Ten Conference. No schedule was immediately released.
“There are still many details to be worked out, but I will be happy to see the Badgers return to competition in 2020,” says UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank. “I’m particularly grateful to Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, who led the Return to Competition Committee, which developed a viable schedule.”
