Keston Hiura hit a sacrifice fly to score Avisail Garcia with the winning run in the eighth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to edge the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 in the opening game of a doubleheader Monday.  In the second game, the Cardinals edged the Brewers 3-2 in nine innings.

In the first game, the Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth when Tommy Edman’s two-out single up the middle off Freddy Peralta (2-1) brought home Tyler O’Neill, who had started the inning on second base under Major League Baseball’s new extra-inning format.

The Brewers answered off reliever Ryan Helsley (1-1) in the bottom of the eighth.

Avisail Garcia’s leadoff walk put runners on first and second. Helsley struck out Christian Yelich, but Ryan Braun followed with a double off the center-field wall that scored Tyrone Taylor and advanced Garcia to third.  Austin Gomber replaced Helsley and walked Jace Peterson to load the bases before Hiura hit his fly to left. Garcia scored without a throw.

Milwaukee’s rally in the eighth snapped the Brewers’ string of 21 consecutive scoreless innings. Chicago Cubs right-hander Alec Mills threw a no-hitter against them Sunday in a 12-0 blowout

In the second game, Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jedd Gyorko belted a two-run homer off Ponce de Leon.  It was Gyorko’s eighth of the season.  St. Louis scored single runs in the fifth, seventh and nine innings.  Brewers starter Corbin Burnes lasted 4 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and one run. Justin Topa (0-1) allowed the winning run in ninth and took the loss.  Ponce de Leon gave up two runs on four hits in six innings.  Genesis Cabrera (4-1) pitched the eighth and struck out the side while walking one.  Tyler Webb pitched the ninth and picked up his first save.

The Cardinals and Brewers meet again Tuesday in the lone single game of this three-day, five-game series. Jack Flaherty (3-1, 3.08 ERA) pitches for St. Louis and Brett Anderson (2-3, 4.64) starts for Milwaukee.  First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday, the Pirates and Reds split a doubleheader as Cincinnati won the first game 3-1 but Pittsburgh bounced back to win the nightcap 9-4.  The Cubs had the day off.

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Monday that starting right guard Lane Taylor will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee.  The injury happened during the Packers’ 43-34 season-opening win at Minnesota on Sunday.

“My heart goes out to him,” LaFleur said. “Just battling back from the significant injury he had last year to get to a position where he was in our starting lineup, certainly he will be missed. I just feel bad for him as an athlete, as a man. It takes a lot to come back from a significant injury and he put the time in and put himself in great position to have a great year.”

Taylor played just two games last season before tearing a biceps muscle. Rookie Jon Runyan replaced Taylor.

Meanwhile, starting left guard Lucas Patrick suffered a shoulder injury in the first half and did not return. However, it looks like Patrick will be ready for Sunday’s home opener against the Lions.

Defensively, defensive lineman Kenny Clark suffered a groin injury and his availability for the Lions is unknown.

“I think you’ll find out later in the week with Kenny,” LaFleur said. “I really don’t know where we’re at right now.”

The state Department of Natural Resources wants to learn from hunters how many deer they’re seeing — and how they pick and choose which deer to take aim at.  The DNR says it will contact more than 130,000 randomly selected hunters by email. The hunters will be asked to fill out a three-day diary during their hunting trips.

The survey will ask questions including how many hours were spent hunting, how many deer were seen, how many deer the hunter had an opportunity to harvest and how many deer were harvested.

“We test piloted this study in Bayfield and Iowa counties last fall, and we are hoping to build off of our findings to figure out how often hunters are passing bucks they consider to be too small,” Meghan Pluemer, DNR resource sociologist, said in a news release.

The survey began this past weekend with the bowhunting season and will run through the gun deer season, which ends Nov. 29.
