Brandon Woodruff pitched six strong innings, Orlando Arcia snapped a 2-for-21 stretch with a go-ahead base hit in the fourth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Tuesday night. Woodruff (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out eight and walked one. The victory was a nice bounce back for the Brewers’ opening-day starter after a 7-1 loss at Minnesota in his previous start. He worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fifth. Ben Gamel helped him out with a perfect throw from right to force out Freddy Galvis at home.
Brent Suter came on to start the seventh and struck out the side. Devin Williams retired the side in order in the eighth. Josh Hader handled the ninth for his seventh save that gave the Brewers consecutive wins for the first time this season.
Milwaukee answered with three runs off Luis Castillo (0-4) in their half of the fourth after the Reds grabbed a two-run lead on Mike Moustakas‘ base hit in the top of the inning. Christian Yelich scored on a fielder’s choice and throwing error by first baseman Joey Votto. Gamel doubled home Keston Hiura before Arcia’s clutch base hit. Gamel was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw from right fielder Nick Castellanos to keep it close.
Castillo pitched much better than his previous start, his shortest of the season. He allowed four runs in 3 1/3 innings in a 4-0 loss to Kansas City last Tuesday. Against the Brewers, he allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits over six innings. He struck out nine and walked four. Votto and manager David Bell were both ejected by home plate umpire Shane Livensparger after the Reds batted in the top of the eighth. Cincinnati lost their fourth straight and fell to 2-6 on the 10-game road trip.
Sonny Gray (4-2, 2.21 ERA) aims to extend an active streak of 39 consecutive starts, since Aug. 25, 2018, without allowing more than six hits, the longest such streak in Major League history when the clubs close out their series tonight.. Adrian Houser (1-2, 3.72 ERA) looks for his first victory over Cincinnati (0-0, 4.50 ERA) in his third career start and sixth appearance overall. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday the Tigers beat the Cubs 7-1, the White Sox shut out the Pirates 4-0 and the Royals edged the Cardinals 5-4.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was voted NBA Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday, becoming the fifth player to win that award and MVP in a career. The Milwaukee Bucks All-Star, who was MVP last year and is the favorite to repeat this season, ended the two-year reign of Utah center Rudy Gobert as Defensive Player of the Year.
Antetokounmpo received 75 first-place votes from a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters, finishing with 432 points. Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis was second (200 points; 14 first-place votes) and Gobert (187 points; six first-place votes) third.
Antetokounmpo joined Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson and Kevin Garnett as players to do the MVP-Defensive Player of the Year double. He was runner-up for the defensive award last year.
He led the Bucks to the NBA’s best record and helped them limit opponents to 101.6 points per 100 possessions, the league’s top defensive rating, as of March 11. Voting was conducted on games through then, before the season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. He became the first Bucks player to win Defensive Player of the Year since Sidney Moncrief, who earned the first two that were awarded in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons.

The Packers were back on the practice field on Tuesday. Rookie inside linebacker Kamal Martin has been one of the most consistent players at his position training camp and certainly is one of the Packers outstanding young players. The 5th round draft pick from Minnesota finished his Big Ten season last fall but elected to skip the teams bowl game, opting instead for knee surgery. That allowed Martin to be healthy and ready to go by the time he was drafted by the Packers. Now, he’s not only in the rotation at ILB, but he’s getting some rotations with the #1 defense. Martin was asked what his goal is for this season. He said he wants to give it his all “to the best of your ability knowing that you didn’t leave anything on the table” He went on to say, “That comes from mental work, that comes with physical work, that comes with understanding how to be a good teammate, all of that stuff.”

The Minnesota Vikings will play at least their first two home games without fans in attendance. With current Minnesota Department of Health guidelines specifying an indoor venue capacity of 250 people, officials from the Vikings, the state, U.S. Bank Stadium, the NFL and the city of Minneapolis were unable to establish a prudent way to open the gates to the public for now.
The Vikings will host Green Bay on Sept. 13 and Tennessee on Sept. 27 with the 66,000 seats empty. Over the ensuing five weeks, Minnesota plays at home only once, on Oct. 18 against Atlanta.
In a statement, the Vikings said: “We have sought to balance the opportunity to provide fan access with the responsibility to adhere to public health and medical guidance in order to maintain the health and safety of fans, players, staff members and the broader community. Ultimately, public health is our top priority.”
NFC North rivals Green Bay and Detroit have announced their first two home games will be played without fans. Chicago also will start the season without spectators but has not specified for how many games.
