Yu Darvish took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his third straight dominant start, and the major league-leading Chicago Cubs defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Thursday night.  Darvish allowed just one hit — Justin Smoak’s towering solo homer to right field with one out in the seventh inning on his 98th pitch — before being relieved by Casey Sadler to start the eighth. The 33-year-old right-hander from Japan struck out 11 and threw 104 pitches.  Before Smoak’s drive, Darvish allowed only three baserunners. He walked Ben Gamel in the second and Orlando Arcia in the fifth, and hit Christian Yelich with a low pitch in the first. Kyle Schwarber hit a solo homer in the second as Chicago improved to 13-3 for the first time since 1907. Javier Baez, Ian Happ and David Bote each had an RBI.

Darvish has twice come within one out of a no-hitter, both times with the Texas Rangers.  Cubs slugger Kris Bryant was held out of the starting lineup with a sore left wrist and ring finger.  Bryant was injured trying to make a diving catch in left field Wednesday in the fifth inning of the Cubs’ 7-2 win at Cleveland. He remained in the game and hit a home run in the sixth before being pulled in the eighth

Brett Anderson (0-2) took the loss.  He allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings. The Brewers and Cubs square off again tonight at Wrigley Field as Brandon Woodruff (1-1) with a 2.53 ERA goes against another righty, Tyler Chatwood (2-1) with a 5.40 ERA.  First pitch is at 7:15 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Thursday, the Pirates beat the Reds 9-6 while St. Louis at Detroit was postponed.

The NCAA called off fall championship events — a move Thursday that does not affect major college football — because not enough schools will be competing in sports such as men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball during the first semester.  NCAA President Mark Emmert made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, but it has been clear this was coming as conferences canceled fall sports seasons because of the coronvirus pandemic.

The Packers celebrated a 10th consecutive day with no positive Covid-19 tests on Thursday, while the team was counting down  until Green Bay’s first practice. Saturday’s workout will mark the first time the Packers have had any action on a field since last season ended in Santa Clara 207 days ago. To a man, the Packers are expressing excitement to get back on the field this weekend.

Coach Matt LaFleur says practice will look and feel pretty normal this weekend, despite Covid protocols.  “We are going to try to remind our guys to keep their distance when they are not out there in the drills or in 11-on-11′s,” LaFleur said. “But I think it will have a pretty typical feel to it. We just have to be mindful.”

The Packers are looking for bigger things from 2019 first round draft pick Darnell Savage.  The safety had a pretty stellar rookie showing. Despite a tough ankle injury he had 2 interceptions, deflected a pass that Preston Smith picked off, forced 2 fumbles, and had more than 50 tackles.  “I am an extremely confident guy, but at the same time I always want to get better,” Savage said. “I feel like if you’re not doing it to be the best then what are you doing? I want to improve in everything. I am not going to stop until I am on top of the world. I have gotten better every year that I have played football. The emphasis I want to put on myself is to continue to do what got me to this point, and not overthink or anything like that. Use my God-given ability and the brain he gave me, and the instincts and stuff and just go. I think at times I may have been a little hesitant or whatever like that.”
