(Brown County Sheriff’s photo)

A 26-year-old Texas man that nicknamed himself the “Asphalt Gypsy” was taken into custody Tuesday and is facing contracting fraud charges for targeting the elderly in Brown and Outagamie counties. Mico Jody Miller allegedly would show up at a residence offering to seal a driveway, then would overcharge for the work and sometimes threaten victims to get more money out of them. Miller admitted taking part in similar frauds in Wisconsin over a one month period. He was traveling with a 12-year-old. He’s being held in the Brown County Jail pending charges.  The Brown County Sheriff’s Office received reports about Miller from other jurisdictions.

Sheboygan Police Officer Cleared In Deadly Shooting

The Sheboygan County District Attorney’s Office won’t be charging a Sheboygan Police officer involved in a fatal shooting in the county last month. According to the state’s Department of Justice the DA’s office determined the use of deadly force in the shooting of 32-year-old Kevin Ruffin Jr., was reasonable. During the confrontation Officer Bryan Pray ordered Ruffin to drop weapons he was carrying in the street, but Ruffin refused and charged the officer. The DOJ released a video of the incident yesterday. Officer Pray deployed non-lethal means at first, but they didn’t work.

Ripon Not Immune From COVID Spread

Member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force were informed Tuesday that Ripon has had 28 cases of the coronavirus. Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller gave them that number. He says where in town those people live isn’t important, but the fact that the community is experiencing it is. “So you scratch your head and go where? But the reality is in this town. The way it is most often getting spread is someone goes to an event a wedding or whatever they go to some kind of gathering and they bring it back and then they infect their entire family.” He says we tend to trust our family and friends, but that doesn’t matter with COVID-19 everybody has to take protective measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

FDL Shooting Incident

Police in Fond du Lac are investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the area of West 12th and Morris Street late Tuesday night. No injuries were reported, but police report bullets hit the side of at least two homes. Witnesses told investigators they saw a white sedan leaving the area just after shots were fired. The incident happened around 9:45 pm.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fond du Lac Police Department.

Voting Residency Requirement

One of the changes voters might not realize for the upcoming elections is that the number of days you have to have lived in city, town or village to vote in it has changed. Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg says it used to be 10 days, but by law that requirement has been changed to 28 days. So for next Tuesday’s Primary Election you would have had to live in your current location since at least July 14th. “You had to have resided in your municipality since July 14th. If you did not you must go back to the municipality you came from.” She says the same holds true if you moved here from out of state. Freiberg also reminds voters to have a photo ID with them when they vote and you can use your driver’s license, but if the address on it is different from where you live now you will have to supply a utility bill or some type of document that has your current address on it.

Rail Importance

The Vice President of Economic Development for Envision Greater Fond du Lac says rail is an efficient way for businesses to move their product. Jim Cleveland says that’s why they are looking for ways to expand railroad lines in the county including those served by Wisconsin Southern and CN Railroads. “When we get requests for proposals from whether it be WEDC or the New North, many times one of the criteria is a site along a rail line that we need to have sites for.” He says in addition to the rail companies they work with the municipalities in the county to identify tracks of land that potentially could be used for expansion purposes.
