Tyler Chatwood turned in the sort of performance the Chicago Cubs thought he would deliver on a regular basis. The right-hander, who struggled with his control for much of his first two two seasons with the team, sure was locked in. For the Cubs, it was a welcome sight. Chatwood pitched three-hit ball over six innings, Willson Contreras homered and Chicago beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 on Sunday to take two of three in their opening series. Chatwood (1-0) gave the Cubs just the sort of outing they were looking for after working mostly out of the bullpen last season. He struck out eight and walked two. Contreras smacked an RBI double in a four-run fourth and a long solo homer in the seventh. Ian Happ added a two-run drive in the eighth and Anthony Rizzo belted a solo shot one out later. It was the second homer for both Happ and Rizzo. A day after things got testy between the two teams, the piped-in noise seemed loud enough to drown out any chatter between the dugouts. But the Brewers, who broke through against Yu Darvish in an 8-3 win after they were shut out by Kyle Hendricks on opening day, couldn’t get much going. Leading 1-0, the Cubs sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth. The first six reached safely, starting with Kyle Schwarber’s walk and Contreras’ double. Freddy Peralta then walked Jason Heyward before Corey Knebel gave up RBI singles to Nico Hoerner, Victor Caratini and Happ, making it 5-0. Chatwood didn’t allow a hit until back-to-back singles by Ben Gamel and Orlando Arcia with two out in the fifth that cut the lead to four. Peralta (0-1) was charged with four runs and three hits in three-plus innings.
RHP Adrian Houser looks to start the season tonight on a solid note at Pittsburgh after pitching well following a full-time switch from the bullpen last July. The 27-year-old had a 3.72 ERA in 35 appearances and 18 starts. LHP Steven Brault starts for the Pirates in their home opener. First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

NFL training camps are set to open after the league and the players’ union reached agreement on several issues, including future salary cap mechanisms and how players can opt out of the upcoming season because of the coronavirus. The NFL Players Association’s executive committee and 32 player representatives approved the offers Friday. Players who decide they want to opt out have until Aug. 3 to do so, and they will receive a stipend from the owners. The amount of the stipend will be $350,000 for medical opt outs and $150,000 for voluntary opt outs, two people with knowledge of the decisions told The Associated Press. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the stipend amount was not made public. That agreement eliminated one major obstacle to a full opening of training camps next week. Already, the sides had agreed to cancel all preseason games, as well as to a reduction in the number of roster spots in training camp from 90 to 80 — though teams will have until Aug. 16 to get down to 80. The NFLPA said in a statement on Twitter that its board of representatives adopted the proposed amendments to the CBA by a vote of 29-3. The league also offered an extended acclimation period of 18 days for players, given that the coronavirus caused the cancellation of all offseason on-field activities at team facilities. Training camps are to open Tuesday, though the Texans and Chiefs, who meet in the season opener Sept. 10, have veterans scheduled to arrive this weekend for COVID-19 testing.

It took a late birdie to pull it off, but Michael Thompson secured his second PGA Tour win on Sunday afternoon. Thompson, who started the day tied atop the field at TPC Twin Cities outside of Minneapolis, used a birdie on No. 16 to push ahead late and win the 3M Open — his first win on Tour since 2013. Adam Long finished second, two strokes back, while nine players tied at three strokes off the pace.

Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Friday. The Packers have now signed all nine members of their 2020 draft class.
