Black Lives Matter Mural Approved By Ripon Historic Preservation Commission

23 July 2020 News

Ripon’s Historic Preservation Commission Wednesday evening approved a certificate of appropriateness that will allow a “Black Lives Matter” mural painted on the side of The Heist in downtown Ripon to stay up. The matter now needs the approval of the City Council as part of their consent agenda when they meet next Monday. The owner of the business Sam Luna submitted the certificate of appropriateness application two weeks after the commission rejected another proposal saying it didn’t go through proper channels. The Commission’s meeting was packed with supporters of the mural. The city received nearly 70 emails in support of the mural as part of the Commission’s package of materials for the meeting. Ripon College art professor Rafael Salas helped Luna paint the mural and was one of last night’s speakers.   The building is at 112-114 Watson Street and is within a historic district.
