The Wisconsin State Patrol says four people were killed and a number of others injured in a series of traffic crashes Friday morning in Columbia County near Lodi. It began just before 4 am when one semi rear-ended another semi on I-39 northbound. Subsequently at 5:11 am a pickup truck traveling at highway speed hit a State Patrol cruiser stopped at the scene. Two state troopers and a highway worker were injured by flying debris. With traffic backed up at 6:45 am a major crash occurred a mile south of the two initial crashes. A semi-tractor traveling at highway speeds created a chain-reaction crash involving at least eight vehicles-three semi-tractor-trailers, a dump truck and four passenger vehicles. Four people were killed and three others seriously injured. Traffic was rerouted for about seven hours.
