Major League Baseball owners have approved a proposal to present to players for the 2020 season, according to ESPN and multiple reports. MLB plans to meet with the players union Tuesday to discuss the proposal and start negotiations, according to ESPN and reports.
A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that the delayed season would start around the Fourth of July weekend in ballparks without fans. The plan envisions expanding the designated hitter to the National League for 2020, as well.
Spring training would start in early to mid-June. Each team would play about 82 regular-season games, most against opponents in its own division. Postseason play would be expanded from 10 clubs to 14 by doubling wild cards in each league to four. Teams would prefer to play at their regular-season ballparks but would switch to spring training stadiums or neutral sites if medical and government approvals can’t be obtained for games at home. Toronto might have to play home games in Dunedin, Florida. The All-Star Game, scheduled for Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on July 14, likely would be called off.

The World Baseball Classic will not be be played next year due to the COVID-19 crisis and resulting play stoppages in both the United States and Japan, per a report by ESPN Digital’s Enrique Rojas. The WBC was scheduled for March 9-23, 2021, in the United States, Japan and Taiwan. It is the fifth edition of the international tournament, which was previously held in 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2017.
The World Classic is organized by an entity that includes MLB, so it is a part of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with players. That expires in December 2021. The tournament is scheduled around major sporting events, which makes it more complicated to reschedule especially given the hosts. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics, set to begin in July, have been pushed back to the summer of 2021. Organizers do not believe the the tournament can be played until 2023,

United States Ryder Cup Captain Steve Stricker today named Zach Johnson and Davis Love III as Vice Captains for the 2020 Ryder Cup, which is scheduled to take place
September 25-27 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. Upon being named U.S. Captain on February 20, 2019, Stricker immediately appointed former Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk as a Vice Captain. Additional Vice Captains will be announced at a later date. “With the Ryder Cup it’s important to surround yourself with quality individuals who you can lean on and who have the best interests of the team in mind,” said Stricker. “Jim (Furyk) and I have talked about this a lot in the last year and now we are happy to add two Ryder Cup veterans in Zach and Davis to the
conversation with the goal of putting this team in a prime position to win. Both Zach and Davis share a passion to compete at the highest level and are strong communicators, which is important, especially when we’re in the heat of competition.”

The American Hockey League canceled the rest of its season Monday because of the coronavirus pandemic and shifted its focus toward returning next season. President and CEO David Andrews announced the league “has determined that the resumption and completion of the 2019-20 season is not feasible in light of current conditions.” The AHL’s Board of Governors made that determination in a conference call Friday. The 84th season for the NHL’s top minor league was suspended March 12 with 209 games remaining. That was the same day the NHL stopped play, though it still hopes to resume and could have many AHL players as part of expanded rosters.
