Two Inmates Escape From Columbia Correctional

The two inmates that escaped from Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage showed up at a shelter in Rockford, Illinois shivering and freezing Friday morning. The person who runs the shelter recognized them from news stories and called police who showed up within minutes. Forty-six-year-old Thomas Deering is and 37-year-old James Newman were still wearing their prison-issued sweats and thermal shirts when they arrived at the shelter. In 2016 Newman was convicted in Jackson County of kidnapping, escape and theft. Deering was convicted in Milwaukee County in 2001 of kidnapping, burglary and second-degree sexual assault. A kitchen worker at the prison, 46-year-old Holly Marie Zimdahl of Pardeeville, has been arrested for her role in the escape. Additional arrests are expected.

The state’s Department of Corrections is looking for two inmates that escaped from Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage Thursday morning. Thomas Deering is 46-years-old and James Newman is 37-years-old. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies are involved in the search for the two who should be considered dangerous. The two are already believed to have traveled outside of Columbia County. Anyone with information on their whereabouts should contact local law enforcement.
