Campgrounds Prohibition Explained
Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says they weren’t trying to target traditional campers by closing down campgrounds due to the COVID-19 outbreak. She says it encourages non-essential travel and draws people from outside the county, increasing shopping at local stores which also impacts supplies and groceries. “With campgrounds there could be an ability for somebody to use it as a home if they were coming from, if they were snowbirds traveling up. We have a lot of hotels, we have a lot of openings in hotels that people can use. And that is a small group of people that that would affect.” Mueller says the majority of people that use campgrounds generally do it as a recreational use, but that isn’t what the parks and campgrounds were seeing before the Governor’s order. She says a campground setting isn’t very conducive to the current social distancing requirements.
COVID 19 Hurting Tourism
Wisconsin Tourism Secretary-designee Sara Meaney says the COVID-19 outbreak is making a dent in Wisconsin’s Tourism Industry. She says in 2018 tourism accounted for $21.6 billion in revenue and over 199,000 jobs. She says the impact over the first month was staggering. “In the last four weeks alone the U.S. Travel Association has reported that Wisconsin has lost $631million in travel spending. Those are dollars not spent in a retail store or not spent in a hotel or not spent going to a concert or show.” She says bars, restaurants, hotels, resorts, museums, parks and other activities are all being affected while we try and keep ourselves safe from the pandemic.
