Unemployment Numbers Surging

The state’s Department of Workforce Development is coping with a huge increase in the number of people filing for unemployment benefits. DWD officials say 115,679 state residents filed unemployment applications last week and the Unemployment Insurance Division received more than 1.5 million calls. At times they were receiving 160 calls per second overloading the system. The department increased its technology capacity and has hired more call center workers.  Anyone who needs to file is asked to apply online.
